Description
March 11, 1952 H. w. BROWN PASTRY BOX Filed March 30, 1948 (Ittorneg Patented Mar. 11, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to a pastry container and particularly a container for transporting pastry from place to place.
The principal objects of the present invention are to provide a portable pastry container; for retaining the pastry in undamaged condition; to provide a container of this character made from two substantially semicylindrical sections; to provide two of the mating edges of sections with mating rolled portions to provide a hinge at one side so that the container may be opened to provide access to the interior by pivoting the two pieces on the hinge; to provide shelves in said semicylindrical sections; to provide for adjusting the shelves to accommodate pastry of different thickness; to provide a bottom in said sections having a reinforcement portion; to provide a rigid structure; to provide a lock on the open edge of the container opposite the hinge portion; and to provide a device of this character simple, economical to manufacture and efficient in operation.
In accomplishing these and other objects I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred forms of which are shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my invention showing the container in open position.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the invention showing the container in closed position.
Fig. 3 is a side View of one of the sections of the container.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view particularly illustrating the hinge portion in partly assembled position.
Fig. 5 is a cross-section through the hinge portion of the container.
Referring more in detail to the drawings:
I designates a container embodying the features of my invention comprising two semicylindrical sections 3 and 4 preferably made of material such as metal, plastic or the like, having a slightly dome-shaped top 5 and a slightly recessed bottom 6 (Fig. 3). The sections 3 and 4 are substantially identical and have a side 1 which extends in semicircular form, and the top edge is bent over forming a flange as indicated at 6' and a semicircular top plate 8 welded or otherwise suitably secured to said inwardly turned flange portion of the side. If desired the sections may be stamped or formed out of suitable material in one piece, as here illustrated.
The lower edge of the side 1 is turned inwardly forming a flange 9 (Fig. 3-) to which is welded or otherwise suitably secured a semicircular strip or ring 1 0. Welded to the free edge of this semicircular strip in is a semicircular plate or bottom portion H. The plate H is secured to the strip ID by welding as indicated at l2 to provide a reinforced and rigid bottom structure. It will be obvious that when making the sections of one piece material the structure illustrated particularly the reinforcement of the bottom will be eliminated.
The straight sides of the semicylindrical sections are adapted to face each other in close relation.
Welded or otherwise suitably secured to the rear edges I3 and [4 of the semicylindrical sections 3 and 4 are strips of sheet metal l5 and IS. The free edges of the sheets l5 and 16 are rolled or coiled as best illustrated in Fig. 5 forming substantially cylindrical members I1 and I8, the cylindrical mem ber l8 being slightly larger than the member I! so as to fit over said member to form the hinge or pivotal member I9 for the container. The cylindrical members l'l and I 8 are connected together by sliding the member I 8 over the member I1 from the top as illustrated in Fig. 4. A shoulder 20 is provided in the semicylindrical section 4 to form a stop against which the cylindrical portion of the hinge I! will abut to hold the two sections in mating relation and preventing the section 3 from passing section 4 when carried. If desired these cylindrical hinge members may be formed integrally with the sides of the sections.
A semicylindrical shelf 2| is provided for each of the sections 3 and 4 and is removably and adjustably adapted to be supported by said sections. Hangers 22 are secured to the shelf 2| by rivets or the like 23 and I here preferably show one hanger near the front and back open edge of the sections 3 and 4 and one hanger at substantially the back center of the shelf 2|. The hangers have their free ends turned to provide hooks 24 adapted to engage in openings 25 located near the front and back edges of the sections 3 and 4 and also in the respective sides of said sections as illustrated in Fig. 3.
To provide for adjusting the height of the shelves in the container, I provide a plurality of the openings 25 vertically in the sections so that the shelves may be placed. in any desired position in the container to accommodate pastry of different thickness. The holes 25 may be slightly elongated or large enough so that the hooks 24 may be quickly and easily attached thereto or removed therefrom.
I also provide a latch 29 for the free edges of the respective sections comprising an eye 3flsecured to the edge 3 l of the section 3 and brackets 32 and 33 secured to the edge 34 of the section 4, the brackets 32 and 33 forming bearings for a latching member 35. The latching member-35m formed of wire and bent upon itself with the free end spaced apart as best illustratedin' Fig. 1, this spacing being of a sufficientdistance to pass over the eye 30. The latch 35 is slightly longer than the distance between the bearingmembers of the brackets 32 and 33 and when the eye is inserted between=,;the .ends of :the loop; the .loop may ;thenv be lowered to engage, the eye portions tox'lock the -respective sections together.
;,.Itwil1 be obvious: from the foregoing'that I WhatgLclaim-and desire to secureby Letters .efiatent is:
A portable pastry container made frcmvsub- -stantially-l lightuweight sheet metal or theilike -'c omprising,'-two ,ma-ting sectionshaving semicircular: sidewalls: and having their upper and loweredges tu-rned inwardly forming vflangesmaid j-sectio'ns. having oppositely facing open faces whin'gedly connected together at one edge of .said
sections, said hinge forming'a pivot for said secltionsifor opening and closing the container, '4 shelves secured :in; the respective sections-atop for each section having straight mating edges and their side edges rounded to conform to said sections rigidly secured to the upper flange of said sections, a bottom for said container comprising semi-circular fiat ring members secured to the lower flanges of said sections, said ring members being set at an angle downwardly from the edges of said sections, semi-circular plates welded to the inner edges of said ring members,
said weldybeing of substantially greaterlthickness than saidplates andring members for re-inforcing said bottom, said plates forming a substantially fiat bottom for said container, handles for said sections, each end of said handles being secured to said inturned flanges and said top portions adjacent the mating edges of said sections,
and means on the edges of said sections opposite the hinge portions for locking said sections together.
