Description

No. 820,995. PATENTED MAY 22, 1906. W. M. SMITH.
MULTIPLE STAY HINGE.
APPLICATION I'ILBD MAY 4, 1905. I
lbwenton 5 mid A ftorney.
STATES WILLIAM M. SMITH, OF NEW CUMBERLAND, WEST VIRGINIA.
MULTIPLE-STAY HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1906.
Application filed May A, 1905. Serial No. 258,791.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAu M. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Cumberland, in the county of Hancock and State of Test Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Multiple- Stay Hinges; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hinges, and has for its object the provision of a hinge having greater strength and security in proportion to those of the same size of ordinary form.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown my improved hinge in various ways, in which drawings Figure 1 is a perspective View of a straphinge embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of the two members thereof separated. Fig. 4 is a plan view showing the application of this form of hinge to a door .and frame. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of another form of hinge, showing the invention applied thereto.
As I have in this case more fully shown the application of my invention to that form of hlnge ordinarily termed strap-hinge and as it is apparent that the improvements are applicable to any or all forms of hinges whose leaves are hingedly arranged upon a pintle a full and comprehensible description will answer for all forms.
as shown by dotted lines at Fig. 1 and by full lines at Fig. 4.
At Fig. 5, where the invention is shown as a hinge with rectangular form of leaves, the main leaves are designated as 1 and 2 and the supplemental leaves as 1 and 2 the construction being substantially the same as 1plreviously described in the case of a strap Inge.
It is apparent that a hinge constructed in this manner greatly increases the strength of the pintlesockets, gives the door or other member to which it is applied a better support or anchorage than. is possible with the ordinary two-member form, and at the same time affords additional security, owing to the same being fastened in two ways at right angles to one another. It is also, as before stated, apparent that other forms of hinges than those shown and described may be constructed in the same manner. Therefore I do not wish to limit myself to improvements in only the forms shown, but to all forms to which the same is applicable.
Having thus fully shown and described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a strap-hinge, two pairs of straps each pair terminating and having substantially like turned-over cylindrical sockets at their extreme inner ends, one pair being pivotally secured by or mounted upon a pintle passing through their sockets and the other .pair mounted upon the sockets of the first-mentioned pair and extending at right angles therefrom, in the manner substantially as shown and set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM M. SMITH.
Witnesses: E. A. HART,
JAMns BRADLEY.
