FLUSH HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 2, 1906.
Application filed June 15,1905. Serial No. 265,360.
-. declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in flush hinges; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of devices herein shown and described.
The object of the invention is to improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of, this character, and thereby render the same more durable and eflicient in use and less expensive to manufacture.
The above and other objects, which will appear as the nature of my invention is better understood, are accomplished by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved flush hinge. Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views taken on the lines 2 2 and 3 3 of Fig. 1, showing the hinge in its'closed position. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1, the hinge being in its open position. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the link, and Fig. 6 is a similar view of one of the leaves of the hinge.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 and 2 denote two parts or elements which are connected by my improved hinge 3. The parts 1 and 2 may be a door and door-frame, two hinged parts of a piano-cover, or any similar parts which it is desired to hingedly connect. The hinge 3 consists of two similar leaves or members 4, which are connected by means of a link 5. Each of the leaves 4 is adapted to be secured by screws or other suitable fastening means 6 in a recessed portion 7 of one of the parts 1 2 and is formed at its ends with inwardly-extending flanges 8, between which the link 5 is disposed and pivoted. These flanges 8 have beveled or cut-away corners 9, and the body portion of each leaf is recessed, as shown at 10. The link 5 is of substantially rectangular form and has at its ends centrally-disposed V- shaped or wed ed-shaped stops 11, which are adapted to fit I etween the beveled corners 9 of the flanges of the two leaves. The side edges of the links 5 are beveled or cut away,
as shown at 12, to coact with the recesses 10, formed in the body ortions of the leaves 4. The link 5 is pivota ly connected to each of the leaves 4 by pivotpins 13, which are passed through openings formed in the flanges 8 and into the outer portions of the ends of the link, as clearly shown in the drawings.
The construction, use, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description. It will be seen that when the parts 1 and 2 are in their closed position the hinge will lie flush with said parts, as shown in Fig. 1.
A hinge constructed as herein shown and described is very strong and durable and may be manufactured at comparatively small cost.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that I do not wish to limit myself to' the precise construction herein set forth, since various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A flush hinge comprising leaves 4, 4 formed with inturned flanges 8 havin cutaway corners 9, a link 5 adapted to t between said leaves and having stops 11 at its ends, to engage the cut-away corners of said flanges, and pivots connecting said link to the flanges of said leaves, substantially as described.
2. A flush hinge comprising leaves 4, 4 formed at their ends with inwardly-projecting flanges having beveled corners, and upon their inner sides with longitudinally-extending recesses, a link 5 disposed between the flanges of said leaves and having beveled edges to coact with the recesses in said leaves, and wedge-shaped stops at its ends to coact with the beveled corners of said flanges, and pivotpins passed through said flanges and into said link, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
THOIVLAS FRANKLIN SALING.
