HINGE.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented Apr. 7, 1914.

Application filed October 31, 1911. Serial No. 657,754.

1 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN S. WRIK'EMA'N, citizen of the United States, residing at Kilgore, in the county of Carroll and State of etliciency and utility of devices of this character.

Another object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed hinge whereby the door may be readily mounted upon the casing or frame and without detaching any of the parts.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is readily reversible in position without structural change in the parts so that a right and left-handed hinge is provided.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character constructed from sheet or plate metal pressed into the required shape and which may be inexpensively manufactured.

\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim.

The improved device may be applied to any of the various forms of doors or like structures which require a spring hinge, but is more particularly adapted, as above stated, for use upon screen doors, and in the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved device and a portion of a door and its frame in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional detail of the hinge members. Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of the main leaf portions of the hinge detached. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the supporting member.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters.

The improved hinge is formed of two main leaves each preferably pressed from a single plate of metal. One of the leaves is.

formed with a body 10 having lateral flanges 11-12 at the ends, the flange 11 terminating at one end in a projecting ear 13, while the flange 12 is formed with a similar proecting ear 14. The otherleaf of the improved hinge comprises a body 15 having lateral flanges 16-17 and ears 18-19, and is practically a duplicate of the previously described member so far as the body portions and the flanges and ears are concerned. The body 15 is provided with an outwardly pro ecting web 20 which is curved into semicylindrical shape and extends between the ears 18-19 and is spaced at the ends therefrom and is concentric substantially to the ears as shown and forms a hood to cover and protect the spring as hereafter explained.

The ears of the two body members overlap and are connected by a pintle 21. A spring 22 surrounds the pintle within the hood 20 and likewise between the ears 13-14. One end of the spring is extended as shown at 23 for engagement against the inner face of the body 15 while the other terminal 24: of the spring projects into engagement with the inner face of the body 10. By this means the requisite-spring force is applied to the hinge member as hereafter explained.

The body 10 is formed with a relatively large transverse opening having its inner edge 24 extending in parallel relations to the pintle 21 or in parallel relations to the vertical plane of the hinge, while the opposite edge 25 of the opening extends obliquely to the vertical plane of the hinge. The body 15 is provided with a similar opening having its inner edge 26 extending in parallel relations to the vertical plane of the hinge, while the outer edge 27 extends obliquely to the vertical plane of the hinge. The flange 11 is provided with a recess 28, while the flange 12 is provided with a similar recess 29, the recesses communicating with the opening defined by the edges 24-25 and extending at their ends beyond the edges of the opening as shown. The flanges 16-17 are provided respectively with a similar recess 30-31 whose ends extend beyond the edges 26-27 of the opening.

A supporting member is provided with each of the hinges each supporting member comprising a body 32 having ribs 33-3 1 extending from their edges and intermediate the side faces so that rabbets or shoulders are formed upon opposite sides of the ribs. The ribs 33-34 do not extend the full length of the body 32, but stop short thereof at one end whereby stop shoulders are formed.

The portion of the body 32 which contains the ribs 33-34: conforms in outline to the openings defined by the edges 2425 and 26--27, While the ribs 33-34 are designed to pass through the extensions at the ends of the recesses with the wider ends of the edges gfthe openings bearing upon the .shoulders The supporting members 32 are preferably attached to the casing and remaining thereon and being relatively thin do not attract attention when the door is detached.

The members 32 may be attached to the door in reverse position and the hinge leaves reversed in position and attached to the casing without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages, as the operation and the results would be the same and without structural change in the device. I

When it is desired to remove the door it is only necessary to elevate the door together with the hingedly united leaves when the door is released.

It will be noted that the body 10 is provided with apertures adapted to receive fas tening devices whereby the body may be. attached permanently to the door or casing, as the case may be.

The leaf members are each pressed or' stamped from a single sheet of metal, ref? 'erably steel, and may be of any require size or strength of material to correspond to the weight of the door to which they are to be attached, and may be plated, japanned or otherwise coated 'or protected.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

A hinge comprising coacting leaves swingingly united and having lateral flanges at their upper and lower edges and an opening in each leaf, each of said flanges having a recess at the juncture thereof with the leaves and communicating with the opening, the recesses being of greater length than the width of the openings and extending beyond the edges of the same, and a supporting member adapted to be connected to a door casing with ribs centrally of its edges and conforming to and engaging the outer face of said body adjacent to said openings, said recesses passing over the supporting members and said supporting members being reversible in position. y

In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
