UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIcE.
SILAS H. RAYMOND, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO T. STEW- ART WHITE AND THOMAS FRIANT, OF SAME PLACE.
BOX-LID SUPPORT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 486,503, dated November 22, 1892.
Application filed June 16, 1892. Serial No. 436,953. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it k nown that I, SILAS H. RAYMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Box-Lid Supports; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates tov improvements in box-lid supports, and its object is to provide the same. with certain new and useful features, hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective of a device embodying my invention, illustrating its operation in opening the lid of the box; Fig. 2, a perspective of the same, showing the box closed and the device arranged for packing; and Fig. 3, an end elevation of the same, showing the box open and the operation of my device in supporting the lid of the same.
Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures.
A represents the body of a cigar-box, B the lid of the same, and O a short lever pivoted to said lid near the hinged side of the same and arranged to turn on said pivot in the plane of the lid, and when turned at substantially right angles to the hinged edge of the lid projects beyond the same, forming a rigid arm, which arm is utilized to open the lid by applying the thumb to the same, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and when the lid is open a little beyond the vertical the end of said lever engages the side of the box below the hinge and sustains the lid in position, as illustrated in Fig. 3. I am thus able to hold the box in one hand and with the same hand by means of the thumb thereof can turn the support 0 into position, and also open the lid of the box when the box is closed by turning the lever to a position substantially parallel with the hinged edge of the lid. It no longer projects from the box, but lies close upon its upper surface out of the way of any adjacent box or other thing.
.In the device shown the lever consists of a continuous piece of wire, which is bent at right angles and passed through the lid of the box and again turned at right angles, having its inner end in contact with the inner surface of the lid. I do not limit myself to this particular construction, nor to its application to cigar-boxes only. any modified forms may be desired, and it also may be applied to any box or case having a hinged lid or door to close one side of the same. I prefer the con struction shown as being the cheapest and easiest applied, and consider that its most valuable application is to cigar and other 6 5 small boxes that may be held in the hand.
What I claim is- 1. A box-lid support consisting of a lever pivoted to the lid near the hinged side thereof and adapted to turn in the plane of the lid and project beyond the same and engage the side of the box below the hinge, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a box having a lid hinged to the same at one side, a lever pivoted to the same lid near the hinged side and swinging in the same plane and projecting beyond the said lid and engaging the side of the box, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a box having a lid hinged at one side, a lever consisting of a single piece of wire bent at right angles and passing through said lid near the hinged side thereof, substantially as described.
4. A box-lid support consisting of a continuous wire passing through said lid near the hinged side thereof and bent at right angles at opposite sides of said lid and having its outer end adapted to project beyond the said lid and engage the side of the box and to turn and rest upon the outer surface of said lid, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SILAS I-I. RAYMOND.
