(No Model.)
B. M. GILPATRIOK.
' CORN POPPBR. No. 556,922., Patented Mar. 24,1896.
l a I. 1 Jaw UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDGAR M. GILPATRICK, OF MACI'IIAS, MAINE.
CORN-POPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 556,922, dated March 24, 1896. Application filed July 30, 1895. Serial No. 557,562. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ED can M. GILPATRICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Machias, in the county of Vashington and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Poppers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in corn-peppers, and has for its object to provide a corn-popper which may be held and operated by one hand, which is simple in construction and easily and cheaply made.
In the drawings which form a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved corn-popper closed. Fig. 2 is a view of the same open.
To the body 1 0f the corn-popper, of wiregauze of common form, I hinge a cover 2 by spring-hinges 11, which is surrounded by a frame Extending perpendicularly from the cover on its upper side near the center is an elliptical wire loop 4:. Extending from one end of the body of the popper and secured to the frame or body thereof is the handle 5, composed of a single rod of metal bent upon itself, (or wood may be used, if desired,) the outer portion of which is compressed for a portion of its distance to form a grasping-piece 6. Near the end of the handle is pivoted a thumb-lever '7, from the inner end of which extends a stifi metal rod 8, the free end of which is inserted in the loop 4 and moves freely therein. To the handle 5 and near its outer end is secured a bridge 9, which normally lies against and in a plane with the handle. Between the compressed portion of the handle 5 and the thumb-lever 7 is inserted a spring 10.
To operate my improved poppenby depressing the outer end of the thumb-lever '7 the opposite end of the rod 8 is raised on the loop i, causing it to lift the cover suifieiently to I enable the popper to be filled with corn, the rod 8 being held in place, if desired, by raising the bridge 9. "When the corn has been placed in the pepper, the bridge 9 is thrown down, the outer end of the lever 7 released, the spring causing it to be thrown up, and the opposite end to which the rod 8 is secured being depressed the lid is closed by the operation of the hinges 11.
The construction and operation of my improved popper are, as will be readily seen, extremely simple, and are fully shown by the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A corn-popper composed of the grain-receptacle having a hinged cover, a loop extending from the cover through which extends a lifting-rod secured to the handle by means of a spring-actuated lever, and a bridge or support for said rod secured to the handle, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDGAR M. GILPATRIOK.
