CASING FOR SPITTOONS. No. 356,252.
Patented Jan. 18, 1887.
' ATTORNE? N PETERS. Phowlllhagmpher. Washington. D: C.
ilNiTEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS F. LANGENBERG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CASING FOR SPITTOONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 356,252, dated January 18, 1887.
Application filed August 31, 1886.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUs F. LANGEN- BERG, of the city. county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casings for Spittoons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved casing for spittoons, which places the spittoon out of sight when not used, which prevents dies and cats, dogs, and other animals from having access to the spittoon, and which prevents all smell arising from the spittoon from entering the room in which it is situated.
The invention consists of a casing inclosing a spittoon, with a lid or cover hinged to the top of the casing, and connected by a rod with the hinged front of the-casing.
The invention also consists in the construction and combination hereinafter described, and specially pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification,in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of my improvement, showing the lid open and parts of the spittoon broken away; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section of my improvement on the lines as :0, showing the cover. closed.
The spittoon A, of any approved construction, is placed in the casing B, provided on its top with a hinged cover or lid, 0, having a plate, D, fastened near the hinged edge on one side of the cover 0. To the plate D is pivotally attached the bar or rod E, pivoted at its lower end to the inside, near the bottom of the front F, and hinged at its upper end to the cross-bar G of the casing B. The front edge of the stop-board H, on which the spittoon rests, limits the inward motion of the front F.
The operation is as follows: In the ordinary position when not in use, the cover 0 of the casing B is closed and the spittoon A is completely out of sight. When a person desires to use the spittoon A, he presses with his foot Serial No. 212,299. (No model.)
the front F inwardly, which causes the lid 0 to swing upwardly to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 by action of the connecting bar or rod E. The cover 0 does not assume a full vertical position, as the inward motion of the front F is limited by the stop-board H. to move a short distance to accomplish the complete opening of the lid. As soon as the operator releases his pressure on the front F, then the lid 0 swings downward again by its own weight and by the weight of the front F, thereby closing the casing A. The rubber band I, on top of the casing A, deadens the noise of the falling lid 0. If desired, a spring may be employed to assist in closing the lid.
I am aware that a spittoon has been provided with a hinged top and bottom connected by a rod, sothat when the top is raised the bottom will be lowered to dump the contents; also, that a spittoon has had a top hinged to or connected by suitable levers with an encircling pedal-ring, by depressing which the cover was raised; and I do not claim the same as of my invention.
Having thus described my invention. what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with a spittoon, of a casing having a hinged lid connected by a rod with a hinged front, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a casing, of a hinged lid, a rod pi-votally connected with the said lid, and a hinged front pivotally connected with thesaid rod, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with a casing, of a hinged lid, 2. rod pivotally connected with the said lid, a hinged front pivotally connected with the said rod, and astop to limit theinward movement of the hinged front, substantially as shown and described.
JULIUS F. LANGENBERG.
