SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 244,191, dated July 12, 1881.

Be it known that I, WILLIS M. OoRWIN, of Glen (love, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Store-Gounter Seats, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

Figure 1 is aside elevation of my improvement, the counter being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation of a part of the same, showing the catch. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of a part of the same, showing the springhinge.

The object of this invention isto promote the convenience and lessen the fatigue of store clerks.

The invention consists in constructing a store-counter seat of a seat, a bar carrying the seat and provided with a catch-recess, a hinged bar pressed forward by a spring to carry the seat beneath the counter, a catch-bar to en- -gage with the recess of the seat-bar to hold the seat in place when under pressure, and a spring to raise the seat-bar from the catchplate when the pressure upon the seat is removed, whereby the said seat, when released from pressure, will be carried in beneath the counter automatically, as will be hereinafter fully described.

A represents the top, B the front, and O the back, of a counter.

D is a seat, which is attached to the outer end ofa bar, E. The bar E is horizontal or nearly so, passes through an aperture in the back 0 of the counter, and is hinged at its forward end to the upper end of a bar, F, which is hinged at its lower end to a bracket, G, attached to the floor or other suitable support. The lower end of the bar F is connected with the bracket G by a hinge-pin, H, around which is coiled a spring, I. The spring I is connected with the bar F and the bracket G in such a manner as to force the upper end of the said bar Fforward toward the front B of the counter. I prefer to use the coiled spring I, as being compact and out of the way, so as not to be liable to be injured or interfered with by articles placed beneath the counter A B 0; but

any other suitable form of spring can be used, if desired.

To the back 0 of the counter is attached a plate, J, which projects over the lower part of the aperture through which the seat-bar E passes, so that its upper edge, when the seat D is drawn outward, will enter a recess, K, formed in the lower edge of the said bar E, when the said seat D is under pressure, and thus keep the said seat in place.

To the back 0 of the counter, in the lower part of the aperture through which the seatbar E passes, is secured a spring, L, which presses against the lower edge of the bar E, so as to raise the recess K'off the catch-plate J, when the seat D is released from pressure, and allow the said seat D to be drawn in beneath the counter.

With this construction, when the seat is to be used the clerk draws the seat out until the recess K engages with the edge of the plate J, so that the said seat will remain in place as long as it may be under pressure. As soon as the sitter rises from the seat D the spring L raises the bar E off the plate J, and the spring I forces the seat in beneath the counter, so that the said seat will be taken out of the way automatically, leaving the back of the counter unobstructed.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A store-counter seat constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of the seat D, the seat-bar E, having recess K, the hinged bar F, the springs I L, and the catch-plate J, as set forth.

2. The combination, with the counter A B O, of the seat D, the bar E, carrying the seat D, and having recess K, the hinged bar F, the spring I, connected with the hinged bar F, the catch-plate J, and the releasing-sprin g L, substantially as herein shown and described,
