P, SHINKLE. Commode.
No. 225,649. Patented Malf. 16,1880.

PETER SHINKLE, OF COVINGTON, KENTUCKY.
COMMODE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,649, dated March 16, 1880.
' Application led January 26, 1880.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER SHINKLE, of Covington, in the county of Kenton and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Commodes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following speciiication and accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a side sectional view.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and cheap commode for use in sickrooms or otherwise, and so constructed that it is ornamental in appearance.
In the drawing,1A A represents the sides or ends of the box forming the main body of the commode, having a bottom, B. The box thus constructed is mounted on rollers Cithin the box, midway between the bottom and the top, vleats D are secured to the sides A, upon which the floor E, covering two-thirds or more of the interior space, is placed. Upon this floor E the chamber H is placed.
The lid F, hinged to the rear side of the box and provided with a suitable orifice centrally, rests on cleats G, secured around the inner surface of the box A.
Any number of cleats D at different heights may be secured to the interior of the box, the object being to so arrange them as to bring the upper edge of the chamber H flush with the lower surface of the lid F.
The top I is hinged to the rear side of the `scent arising from the chamber within.
box A, and has a rear beveled projection, I', which rests against the upright of the box when thrown back, thus keeping the top I in an erect position, to be used as a back-rest for the person using the commode.
A flange, J, around the entire edge of the top I, projects downward, and is made to flt closely to the box A, so that when the top I is closed down there will be no danger of any The top I is then suitably upholstered, as shown, thus presenting` the appearance of a common upholstered stool or divan.
E represents a guard for the chamber H.V
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent, is-
The combination of the box A, having cleats D G, floor E, lid F, and chamber H, with the upholstered top I, having beveled part- I, and flange J, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my hand this 21st day of January, 1880, in the presence of witnesses.
PETER SHINKLE.
