SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 284,852, dated September 11, 1883. Application filed December 1, 1882. (No model.)

Be itl known that I, HUGH H. HUGHEs, of Fair Haven, in the county of Rutland and State of Vermont, have invented a new and Improved Commode-Stool, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved stool which can be used as a commode or as a receptacle for shoes, slippers, &c.

Reference is to be had yto the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure l is a perspective view of my improved commode-stool, showing the cover raised and the hinged bottom of the-cover opened. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation of the same, showing. it closed and the commode-seats curtained within the cover.

A box, A, which preferably increases in cross-section from the bottom to the top, is composed of a base-section, A, and an upper section, A2, hinged to the top of the base-sec` tion. A cover, B, is hinged to the top section, A2, which cover is provided with a hinged bottom, C, which opens downwardly. Bands D hold the cover B from being opened too far. Hooks E and staples F are usedv to lock the section A2 on the base A and the cover B on the section A2. A commode-seat, G, ts in the upper end of the base-section A, and a commode-seat, H, lits in the upper end of the top section, A2.

The cover B is to be upholstered, and the box is covered with fabric, or can be ornamented in any suitable manner. A chamber,

` J, is placed in the bottom of the box A, and

if a child wishes to use the commode the section A2 is raised and the seat G is placed in the top of the base-section A.

If the commode is to be used by a grown person, the section A2 is folded, down, the cover B is raised, and the seat His placed in the top of the section A2. If the box is to be used for receiving shoes and slippers, the seats G and H are placed in the cover B, and the entire box will be empty to receive the shoes and slippers. The stool can also be used as a chair or for other purposes.

Locks or other catches can be used in place of the staples F and hooks E.

The stool is to be provided with casters for convenience in moving it.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,n

A commode formed of the section Athe section A2, hinged to the upper edge thereof, and the separate commode-seats G H, to adapt the commode to children and adults, as described.
