UNITE STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JUDsoN w. BUELL, on UNION CITY, MICHIGAN.
IMPROV EMENT IN WATER AND VAPOR BATH AND COUCH.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,327, dated November 20, 1877 application filed October 13, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J UnsoN W. BUELL, of Union City, in the county of Branch and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement inWater and Vapor Bath and Couch; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of my water and vapor bath and couch with the top removed. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional View. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of the couch.- Fig. 5 is a plan view with couch removed. Fig. 6 is a side View, and Fig. 7 perspective view, of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a combined couch or lounge and water and vapor bath, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates my invention.
A represents the base or frame of the lounge, supported upon suitable feet or legs, and constructed, in any suitable manner, to contain within it abath-tub, B. This bath-tub is made in the ordinary form, and lined with zinc or other suitable material.
C is the seat-frame of the lounge, to which the head-piece D and back E are attached in any of the known and usual ways.
At the footend, on the under side of the seat-frame O, is securely fastened a hook, at, which enters a slot, b, made for that purpose in the foot end of the bath-tub. A similar hook, at, fastened near the front, at the head, on the under side of the seat-frame, enters a loop or staple, b,fastened to the base-frame A.
These devices, together with one ormore ordinary hooks, d, fasten the seat with the head and back to the base, thus completing the lounge, and at the same time completely covering and concealing the bath-tub.
The seat is readily unfastened and removed when the bathtub is to be used.
On top of the base-frame A, along the front edge, are fastened two covers, G and G which are to be used when a vapor-bath is to be taken. These covers are pressed down into the bath-tub when the seat is put on, and when an ordinary water-bath is to be taken, the covers are spread out on the floor in front of the lounge, to protect the carpet from the water.
When a vapor-bath is to be taken, the first cover, G, is stretched across the top of the bath-tub, and fastened or hooked upon a series of buttons, e e, fastened on the back along-the top edge of the seat-frame A. The second cover, G, is then stretched over a series of spring-bows, I I, and fastened on the same buttons 6.
The bows I are made of flat springs, and passed down at the back between the tub proper and its lining, so as to=be out of the way when not in use. The upper end of each bow forms a hook, i, as shown. When these bows are to be used as described, they are drawn up for a suitable distance, and bent over forward Imtil the hooks i can be sprung into slots 00, made at the top in the front of the bath-tub, and thus form a proper support for the second cover, G.
The water in the tub B is emptied out by means of an inclined pump, H, leading from the bottom of the tub at the head out-through the end of the base-frame A, near the top. This pump may be constructed. inany suitable manner, and has a downwardly-projecting spout or outlet, h, as shown.
I do not claim, broadly, the combination of a bath-tub with a sofa, as I am aware such is not new.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the base-frame A, with bath-tub B within the same, of the removable seat-fiame O, with head D and back E, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A loimge provided with a bath-tub and a pump, arranged substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination of the lounge base-frame A,v bath-tub B, covers G G, and" spring hoops In testimony that I claim the above I have 01' bows I substantially as and for the purhereunto subscribed my name inthepfesence poses set forth. of two witnesses.
4. The spring-bows I, provided with hooks J UDSON W. BUELL. 7:, in combination with the bath-tub 1B and its I Witnesses: lining, and the slots :0 therein, substantially as HIRAM SACKETT, and. for the purposes set forth. J AMES 0. BUSHONG.
