To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, JOHN L. KRON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Klttanning, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Satchels and the like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

My invention relates to improvements in handles for satchels and the like.

The object of my invention is to provide a handle in which a metal band is so arranged that the weight of the bag is upon the same, which gives rigidity, strength and wearing qualities to the handle and at the same time providing a handle having the appearance of being made entirely of leather.

Another object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap and more effective handle of this character having certain details of structure hereinafter more fully described.

Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents my improved handle, which consists of a main body-portion 2 formed of heavy leather and is preferably made of several thicknesses to give it the proper size and rigidity, and also to cause it to remain in a curved form, as shown.

Secured to the lower ends 3 and 4:. of the main body-portion of the handle, are the leather strips 5 and 6, which practically form a continuation of the body-portion 2. These strips 5 and 6 are of a width approXimately that of the eyes 7 of the satchel 8, which gives a substantial appearance to the handle and also serve to form a strong and durable handle. These strips 5 and 6 gradually taper into the reduced portions 9 and 10, as clearly shown in the drawings.

The main body-portion of the handle, as shown, has its upper edges rolled, as indicated at 11, and said rolled portions are stitched together by a row of stitching 12, all of which is of the usual structure of handles and needs no further description.

Resting within the body-portion of the handle is a curved flat metal plate 13, which is of a shape to correspond with the bodyportion and rests within the lower portion thereof. The ends of the curved flat metal plate 13 are provided with hooks 14 and 15, which extend down beyond the ends of'the body-portion into the loops formed of the strips 5 and 6 and are adapted to receive the eyes 7 of the satchel, as clearly shown in g. 3 of the drawing. The said metal plate at the center is provided with a slot 16,

through which extends the prongs 17 of thestaple 18, the body-portion of the staple being of such a width that it cannot passfupwardly through the slot 16. The reduced portions 9 and 10 of the strips 5 and 6 are brought up and the prongs 17 of the staple 18 passed through the same and the prongs are bent inwardly,'as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, to fasten the strips 5 and'6 in the center prevent any liability of the strips becoming detached as is often the case in handles of this character wherein the reinforcing 1116111,

After the strips 5 and 6 are fastened by the staple 18, as heretofore described, the rolled edges 11 of the body-portion 2 are secured together by the stitching 12, as heretofore described, which forms a very neat and durable and rigid handle in which the metal reinforcing and strengthening member is completely covered by leather and the cover therefore rigidly and permanently fastened within the handle so that it cannot become loose. While I have shown and described this specific means of securing the ends of the strips 5 and 6 within the handle,.it will be understood that other means carried by the metal plate 13 could be employed with out departing from my invention.

While I have shown the upper rolled ends 11 of the handle stitched together by a row of stitching 12, it will be understood that where the device is to be used as a repair handle to be readily attached to any bag, the stitching would be dispensed with as the extensive use of the handle would hold it in shape without the stitching. This enables the handle to be readily attached or detached when desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A handle of the character described,

of the handle and thus comprising a body-portion, a metal reinforcing plate embedded in the body-portion and having hooked lower ends and a covering for the lower hooked ends of the metal plate and secured to the plate within the bodyportion.

2. A handle of the character described, comprising a curved body-portion, a longitudinally curved metal plate embedded in the body-portion and having hooks at its lower ends beyond the body-portion, leather strips secured to the lower ends of the body portion and extending around the hooked ends of the metal plate and secured to the metal plate within the body-portion.

3. A handle of the character described, comprising a curved leather body-portion, a plate 'embedded in the body-portion and having hooked lower ends beyond the bodyportion, leather coverings secured to the lower ends of the body-portion and extending around the hooked ends of the metal plate and extending within the handle, and a staple carried by the metal plate for securing the ends of said cover thereto.

A handle of the character described, comprising a leather curved body-portion, a metal plate embedded in the body-portion and having hooked lower ends beyond the body-portion, leather strips secured to the lower ends of the body-portion and extending around the hooked ends of the metal plate and having their free ends extending within the body-portion and hooks carried by the metal plate for fastening the ends of the leather strips thereto.

5. A handle of the character described,

comprising a curved body-portion, a longitudinally curved metal plate embedded in the body-portion and having hooks at its lower ends beyond the body-portion, strips secured to the body-portion and extending down around the hooked ends of the metal plate and having their free ends extending beyond the body-portion and a staple for securing the ends of the strips to the metal plate, substantially as shown and described.

A handle of the character described, comprising a curved body-portion, a longitudinally curved metal plate embedded in the body-portion and having hooked ends beyond the ends of the body-portion, strips secured to the lower ends of the body-portion and extending around and covering the hooked ends of the metal plate and having their free ends extending within the bodyportion, and means for rigidly securing the ends of the strips to the plate within the body-portion.

A handle of the character described, comprising a curved body-portion, a metal plate embedded in the body-portion and having hooked lower ends beyond the body-portion, said body-portion having strips at its lower ends extending around the hooked ends of the metal plate and extending within the handle, the said metal plate having a central elongated slot, a staple supported within the body-portion and extending through the slot in the metal plate and having its free ends passing through the ends of the strips and bent inwardly for securing the strips to the metal plate, substantially as shown and described.

8. A handle of the character described comprising a curved leather body, portion, a plate embedded in the body portion and having hooked lower ends beyond the body portion, leather coverings secured to the lower ends of the body portion and extending around the hooked ends of the metal plate and extending within the handle, and hooked members carried by the metal plate for securing the ends of the said coverings thereto.

9. A handle of the character described comprising a curved leather body portion, a plate embedded in the body portion and having hooked lower ends beyond the body portion, leather coverings secured to the lower ends of the body portion and extending around the hooked ends of the metal plate and extending within the handle, and flexible members carried by the metal plate and adapted to pass through the ends of the said covering and bent over for securing the coverings thereto.
