To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OLIVER P. SINE, a cltizen of the United Statearesiding at Covington, in the county of Kenton and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blinding-Shields for Animals, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to shields for blind-- ing animals temporarily while being led.

The object of my invention is to provide a shield which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which can be quickly placed on the animals head, covering the eyes to form an eflicient means for blinding said animal when it is desired to lead it from a burning building or the like.

lVhile the device is intended to be-used especially in cases of fire it may readily be used on animals whenever there is danger of them becoming panic stricken or frightened. Y

My invention consists in the certain parts combination of parts and details of construction as will be described in the following specification and pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view of my improved shield looking at the front of same. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken through the center of the device. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail view of the wire frame employed which constitutes the frame of the device. Fig. 5 is a cross section taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1.

Referring more particularly to the drawings 1 represents the wire frame which is bent at the top thereof to form. a fore-top loop 1 or a looped portion adapted to surround the fore-top of the animal upon which the device is mounted. The wire frame is also provided with loops 2 and 3- at the sides thereof to form fastening means for the adjustable strap or fastening means 4, for holding the device in position on the animals head.

The wire frame 1 is preferably shield shaped as illustrated and is particularly adapted for use on horses although with very slight changes in the shape only it could readily be adapted for use on most any animal.

The wire frame 1 has mounted thereon the web portion 5 preferably felt. Tlns web portion is bound to the wire frame by a band of suitable material 6 which surrounds the wire frame and is stitched or fastened in any suitable manner to the felt suitable openings in the band being provided for the loops 2 and 3.

To give the device the proper strength and stiffness the stiffening member 7 is provided which is preferably constructed of wood. This stiffening member 7 is placed on the outside of the felt web portion and a covering of leather 8 is placed thereon. This leather covering is stitched to the felt along the sides of the stiffenin member 7 passing over the binding 6 preferably at the ends as shown in the drawing.

The leather covering 8 is provided with slots 9 adjacent the middle of the device in which a handle portion 10 is inserted which is preferably made of a coarse cloth of sufficient strength to be practical. This handle is riveted to the stiffening member 7 through the leather covering 8 by rivets 11.

The wire frame 1 ispreferably made of one piece of wire joined at the bottom as illustrated in Fig. 4. The joint is covered by the sleeve 12 which forms a secure joint for the Wire.

A strap 13 is provided and is adapted to be fastened to the loops 2 and 3 at the sides of the frame 1 by means of the snap hooks 14. The strap ispreferably adjustable to difierent lengths to accommodate animals with different size heads. The adjustableness of the strap may be accomplished in the customary manner as shown, preferably by the traveling clamp 15 to which one end of the strap is attached.

The entire device is so simple in construction that it can be made with very little expense and therefore a number may be provided, preferably one for each animal in the building with but little cost to the owner.

The device when being mounted is grasped by the handle 10 and is placed over the animals eyes and then the strap 13 is passed around the under side of the animals jaw and fastened to the loop 2 on the other side of the device. If the device is properly positioned the loop 1 will surround the foretop of the animal and thereby hold the device in proper position on the animals head.

It will be understood that certain modifications of my invention might be made without departing from its spirit and scope and I do not Wish to be confined to the exact details shown.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A device of the character described comprising a Wire frame, a Web portion mounted thereon, loops formed in said Wire frame at the sides thereof, an extension at the top of said frame adapted to fit the foretop of an animal, and a strap adapted to be fastened to said loops on said frame for maintaining said frame in position on the animals head.

2. A device of the character described comprising a wire frame joined at the bottom, a sleeve covering said joint, a Web portion on said frame, an extension at the to p of said frame curved to fit the fore-top of an animal, loops at the sides of said frame, a strap adapted to fasten to the sides of said frame and in said loops and a handle on the front of said Web portion substantially as set forth.
