UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

- HANDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 24, 1920.
Application filed March 15, 1917. Serial No. 154,921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HANDLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles, of
'which the following is a description.
handle and prevent deformation thereof when subjected to heavy loads and much use.
Another object of my invention is to reinforce thehandle in such a manner as to render the same, even when made of very cheap and low grade materials, stronger and more durable than handles of this type made of the highest grade of materials as heretofore constructed. I
My invention also contemplates a construction wherein the reinforcing means serves to secure component parts of the handle firmly and permanently together; and wherein said means is so disposed and I secured in position that the handle may be made of the usual form andappearance.
A. still further object of my invention is to provide a construction wherein the foregoing results may be obtained without rendering the handle less easy to the grip and without involving the necessity of attachthe handle to the suit case, bag or the like in any other thanthe usual manner, whereby the handle and its connection with the'suit case or bag will have the proper and desired flexibility. Other objects and features of my invention reside in the details of construction and combinations of elements hereinafter more specifically described and claimed.
For a clearer understanding of my invention, attention is directed to the drawing accompanying and forming a part of this specification, in the several figures of which like parts are designated by the same reference characters, and in which:
' Figure lis a view in side elevation,
partly in section and partly broken away,
of a suit case provided with one form of handle embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly broken away, of the suit case and handle shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the handle shown in Figs. 1 and 2; and
Fig. f1 is a view in side elevation, partly in sectlon and partly brokenv away, of a 'modified form of my improved handle.
Referring to the drawing, and especially to Figs. 1 to 3, reference character 1 represents a suit case and 2 the top thereof to which my improved handle A is attached. The handle A comprises the usual bottom or main portion 3 made up of the layers or laminations 3' and the filler member or wickle B. The handle is provided with enlarged end portions 5 and with reduced portions 4 between the portions 5 and the central upwardly curved or bent enlarged gripping'portion. Reference characters 6, 6 represent the usual inverted 'U-shaped keepers, which are suitably secured to the suit case as by rivets 7, and which loosely take over the reduced portions at of the handle A and serve to flexibly attach the latter to the suit case with the enlarged end portions 5 and said reduced portions 4: thereof lying flatly against the top 2. The filler member or wickle B is preferablycomposed of a central longitudinally extending member 8 formed of a piece of steel wire or other stiff material, and a wrapping 9 formed of a triangular piece of paper or other suitable flexible material wound on member 8 between its end portions to give the filler member B the proper shape. The wrapping 9 is so wound on member 8 that the member A will be thickest in the middle, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In making the handle A, the filler member or 'wickle B is applied to the central portion tions of the member 3, with the exception of t the enlarged end portions 5, the latter being either of leather or finished so as to have the appearance of leather. The covering 10 is suitably secured in place on the handle, preferably by means of stitching, indicated at S. This stitching preferably extends through the covering 10 above member 3 closely adjacent both sides of the member B, all thelayers or 'laminations 3 of the bottom member 3, and the covering 10 on the lower side of member 3. The stitching S also preferably extends through layers 3 of the enlarged end portions 5 of member 3 adjacent the edges of the latter, as shown in Fig. 2, and serves to hold these layers more firmly together. In the form of handle shown in Figs. 1 to 3, while the steel wire or other stiff central member 8 of the wickle B serves to strengthen and reinforce the handle, I also preferably employ additional reinforcing means which preferably consists of a pair of strong stiff members 11,
only one' of which is shown, preferably formed offairly heavy steel wire, and respectively applied to the handle adjacent the opposite ends thereof. The members 11 are preferably applied to the bottom member 3 of the handle before the filler member B is a ppliedth'ereto. The members 11 are preferably, though not necessarily, respectively applied to the upper side of the reduced portions 4 of the member 3 and respectively extend longitudinally of the member 3 somewhat beyond such reduced portions. Each member 11 is provided with end portions 12 extended downwardly through all the layers 3 of the bottom member 3 and which have their ends turned over and clenched against the under side of said bottom member, as indicated at 13 in .Fig. 1,
1 whereby the members 11 are securely held in place and also serve to fastenthe layers 3 more firmly together. In order to more firmly hold the members 11 in place, the ends 13 thereof are preferably clenched toward each other as shown.
After the covering 10 has-been stitched onto the'handle, the latter is worked, in any suitablemanner, to the finished form shown, with the side portions of the bottom member 3 pressed up closely about the sides of the filler member 13 and with the central portion of the handle bent and shaped to conform to the grip. The handle is then fastened to the suit case or bag 1 by the keepers 6 in the usual manner. The member 8 is preferably of such length that the ends thereof are concealed by the keepers 6. The ends of covering 10 also preferably terminate at the reduced portions 4 of the handle, so that they will be concealedby keepers 6.
It will be apparent that the strong steel members 11 are dispensed with and in place of the member 8 shown in, Figs. 1 to 3, I employ a fairly heavy piece 15 of steel 'member 8 of Figs. 1 to 3, and the extending portions closely engage the upper side of the end portions of member 3. At each end the wire 15 is extended downwardly, as shown 'at 16 through the layers or laminations 3 of member 3 and clenched back against the bottom or underside of the latter, as shown at 17. Otherwise, the handle C is of the same construction as handle A shown in Figs. 1 to 3.
l/Vhile I have shown and described two preferred forms of my improved handle, it is to be understood that various changes may be madein the form, size and arrangement of the parts thereof without any departure from the spirit of my invention and the scope of the appended claims.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is as follows 1..v A handle comprising a bottom memberand a filler member applied to the bottom member intermediate the ends thereof, said filler member having a stiff reinforcing member extending longitudinally thereof and inclosed therewithin, said handle having reduced portions adjacent its ends whereby it is adapted forconnection with a bag or the like by keepers applied to such bag and taking loosely over such reduced portions, and reinforcing means anchored only and directly to said bottom member and extending longitudinally of the handle at said portions. V
2. A handle comprising a bottom memher having reduced portions adjacent its ends for connection with a bag orthe like, and a filler member applied to the bottom member intermediate the ends thereof, said filler member comprising a stiff metallic member extending. longitudinally thereof and flexible material surrounding said metallic member, anda pair of longitudinally extending metallic reinforcing members respectively applied to said reduced portions on one side of the bottom member, each of said reinforcing members having end portions extending transversely through said bottom member, the ends of said end portions being anchored to the bottom member on the other side thereof.
,3. A handle comprising a bottom member having reduced portionsadjacent its ends for connection with a bag or the like, and a filler member applied to the bottom member, said filler member having a stifiening member inclosed therewithin, and longitudinally extending reinforcing means applied to said reduced portions on one side of the ,botttom member, said reinforcing means having portions extending transversely through said bottom member,'the ends of said transversely extending portions being anchored only and directly to the bottom member on the other side thereof.
4. A handle comprising a bottom member having reduced portions adjacent its ends for connection With a bag or the like, a filler member applied to the bottom member and having a stiff reinforcing member extending longitudinally thereof and in- 10 closed therewithin, and reinforcing means anchored to the bottom member and extending longitudinally of the handle at said portions.
This specification signed and witnessed this 13th day of March,,1917.
WM. HANDLER.
