SHOPPING BAG.

Application filed March 9, 1921. Serial No. 450,923.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, Josnrn MAGILL and JAMES R. DUERLING, citizens of the United States, residing at the city of Baltimore, in

the county of Baltimore City and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shopping Bags, of which the following is a specification.

An object of our invention is to provide a shopping bag that is constructed of durable, flexible, waterproof material that can be cheaply manufactured.

A further object of our invention is to provide a novel means of attaching the handles to the body ofthe bag.

With these and other objects in view that will be apparent as the description of the invention proceeds reference is made to the annexed drawings in which is disclosed one form of our invention, and in which like reference characters refer to similar parts:

The body 1 of the bag, which is of a flexible, waterproof material, as for example such as is used for automobile tops, consists of an oblong, rectangular strip of the material, folded at its midde, and to the edges of which the strips 2, 2, are suitably stitched, as by inturned seams shown, or otherwise secured. If desirable these strips 2, 2, may

be made integral with one half of the blank of material from which the bag is formed, in which case there will be but one seam on each side of the bag instead of two.

Preferably the upper margin of the bag is reinforced by turning down and inwardly a portion 3 thereof, thus providing a double wall for the upper border or mouth of the bag. This down turned portion is suitably secured as by a double row of stitches,

as shown, or otherwise.

An important feature of our invention resides in the construction of the handles 5, 5, by means of which the bag is conveniently carried. These consist of two straps,

as shown, and as the construction and means of attachment of both are the. same, a description of one will suflice. The outer wall of the doubled wall portion of the bag is slitted as at 6, 6, at points equally distant from the middle line of the bag. These slits are made about midway between the double row of stitches referred to above. The said handle 5 consists of a U-shaped strap formed preferably of the same material as the bag and the ends of which are inserted in and through the slits 6, 6 to a point adjacent the lower ro-w of stitches. The handle strap 5 is secured in place by upper and lower fastening elements 7 and.

It will be observed that the upper fastening element 7 passes through the handle strap and through the reinforced or double wall of the upper margin'of the bag, while the lower fastening element first passes through the outer wall of the bag, the handle strap and then through the inner wall of the bag. The fastening element is preferably, though not necessarily, of the double tanged and headed type. The fastening element is inserted from the outside of the bag.

It will be further observed that by having the double walled mouth portion of the bag formed by turning the upper margin of the bag inwardly and downwardly that there will be no exterior seam or obstruction to catch in the clothing of the person carrying the bag,

thus greatly enhancing the utility and appearance of the bag.

Having thus described our invention what we desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
