Be it known that T, WILLIAM E. VVOTRUBA, a citizen of the United tit-ates, residing at Traverse City, in the county of Grand T raverse and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Leather Baskets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention relates to baskets and similar receptacles, and aims to provide a basket cons ructed of leather or equivalent material which will be serviceable'and durable in use, being particularly intended for holding pool halls, although it can be used for various other purposes requiring a basket which will withstand wear and tear.

Among its objects the invention aims to provide novel means for securing the bottom and wall of the basket together, novel means for reinforcing and stiffening the rim thereof, novel handle or bail, and novel means for attaching such handle to the body, in order that the basket will be thoroughly practical and serviceable in use, as well as being capable of convenient manufacture.

lVith the foregoing and other objectsfin view. which will be apparent as the lescription proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts here inatter described and claimed, it being un derstood that-changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a'perspective view of the improved basket.

Figs. 2, 8 and 1, are sectional details taken on the respective section lines 2-2, 3-3 and 1-41 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 5 is a cross section of the handle.

Fig. 6 is a View similar to Fig. 5 showing amodification.

The wall 10 of the basket is composed of a sheet of suitable leather or other equivalent material, and the basket can be of elliptical, circular or other suitable form, as well as being capable of construction in various sizes and proportions. The side wall sheet is bent into shape with its ends chamfered and overlapped, as at 11, and such overlapping ends are secured together by a line of stitching 12, or the like. The bottom 13 is 7 material, and is of a size and shape to fit within the lower edge portion of the wall 10,

said wall having an inner shoulder 11 near itslower edge seating on the edge port-ion of the bottom 13, as seen in Fig. 4. This shoulder id is formed by rabbeting the lower edge portion of thewall 10, at the inside, forming a thin lip 15 that extends clownwardly across the edge of the bottom 13. The bottom 13 has a lower marginal rabbet 16 into which the lip 15 is bent, and the wall and marginal portion of the bottom 13 are secured together by a line of stitching 17, the stitches extending from the outer side oi wall 10 diagonally downward through the dge portion of the bottom 13 above the rabbet 16 and then through the edge portion of the lip 15, thereby not only clamping the wall 10 against the margin or ed e of the bottom 13, but also securing the lip 15 within the rabbet 16, thereby providing a strong seam, which will prevent the wall and bottom separating even under considerable strain. 1 k

The rim of the wall 10 is reinforced and strengthened by bending the upper edge portion of the wall 10 inwardly and fastening it in reflexed position, by a lineof stitching 19, and a wire ring 20 is preferably concealed within the bead thus formed, thus providing a rim which will hold its shape and which will avoid thewall 10 tearing or breaking at the edge.

The handle or bail is also made of? leather or equivalent material, and comprises a strip 21 of such material doubled on a longitudinal line so that it is substantially U-shaped in section. and a filler strip 22 is disposed between the edge portions thereof, and said strips are secured together by a line of stitching 23 extending through the edge portions of a strip 21 and the strip 22. The handle thus formed is quite stifi, although being flexible, and, as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, a stiffening wire 24 is located with in the bend of the strip 21 behind the strip 22 to afford additional means for strength ening the handle. although as shown in Fig. 6 this wire can be omitted. The handle is curved longitudinally, and the edges of the strip 21 extend downwardly toward the body of the basket, so as to be at the under side of the handle.

In order to fasten the ends of the handle to the walls 10 at opposite sides thereof, he

end portions of the strips 21 are opened out, or the edge portions spread apart, to form attaching ears 25 whichoverlap the opposite sides of the body, and the edges of the ears 25 are secured to: the wall 10 by stitching 26. A rivet 27 also preferably secures the central portion of each car 25 to the wall 10, whereby to provide a strong anchor for; the handle. The'seam of the wall 10 is located at one side, and the rivet 2.7 at such side extends through the overlapping portions, as seen in Fig. 3, whereby to strengthen such seam at the upper end where the greatest strain exists tending to open such seam. This provides additional means .for securing the ends of the wall together at the rim of the body.
