Description

HANDBAG.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 2-3, 1921.
Patented D66. 6, 1921-.
PATENT OFFICE.'
ATHELSTAN H. CHRISTIE, 0F ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
HANDBAG.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Deo. 6, 1921.
Application led April 23, 1921. Serial No. 463,747.
To all whom t may concern.' v
Be it known that I, ATHELSTAN H. @Hars- TIE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of St. Louis and Sta-te of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handbags, of which the following is a specification containing a full` clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
l y invention relates to improvements in hand bags and has for its primary object a hand bag of the Gladstone type which is equipped along its outside edges with a reinforcing strip of wear resisting material.
A further object is to construct a hand bag havingalong its outside edges a strip of wear resisting material to which the sides and gussets are attached.
In the dra-Wings,
Figure l is a perspective View of a hand bag embodying my improvement.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmental perspective -section 0f a portion of the hand bag showing my improved reinforcement.
In the construction of my device I employ a yhand bag having a hinged frame 3 which is of the usual construction. To this frame are att-ached gussets 4 and 5. These gussets being of flexible leather. The sides- 6 of the bag are constructed of relatively stiff material and are provided along their edges with a reinforcement 17. Interposed between the sides 6 -and the gussets 4 and 5 is a reinforcing strip which is formed preferably of sole leather, raw hide or the like. This strip consists of the half round portion 8 and the projection 9, thus virtually making the reinforcing strip T-shaped in cross section. This reinforcing strip extends entirely around the edges of the side members as shown in Fig. l, and in stitching the sides 6 and the gussets 4 and 5 together, the stitches l0 not only pass through the gussets, sides and reinforcing strip 7,
but also through the extending portion 9 of the reinforcing strip. When the bag hasV thus been assembled, the half round portion 8 is either left in this unfinished state, 4that is, just as it comes from the machine or it may be dyed and varnished, so as to present a polished appearance. The purpose of this strip is not only to assist in stiffening the side edges of the bag, but also to protect the gussets when the ha@ is set on the floor. .By making this strip of leather or raw hide, a certain amount of flexibility is gir/'en to the edges and no reinforcing corners or wire frames are necessary to hold the bag in sha 3e. aving fully described what I claim is:
l. A hand bag comprising a pair of relatively stiff sides, a T-shaped reinforcing strip formed of sole leather and provided with a rounded exterior edge extending around the edges of said sides and being substantially Hush with the sides, a gusset, a row of stitching passing through the sides and gussets and reinforcing strip for uniting the saine together, and a hinged frame to which said gussets are attached.
2. A hand bag comprising relatively stiff sides, gussets for said sides,.a reinforcing strip formed of sole leather and provided on opposite sides with channels for receiving and protecting the adjacent edges of the sides and gussets, said reinforcing strip hav-v ing a rounded exposed'head projecting over the edges of the sides and gussets, and a row of stitching passing through the sides, reinforcing strip, and gussets for uniting the same together.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
