3 claims. (o1. 1350+278) The present invention relates to handbags and particularly to' suchbagswhich are washable. More particularlythe-invention relates to such handbags or covers for handbags which are of the slip-cover type and which constitute an improvement over our covers for handbags as disclosed in our U. S. Patent No. 1,867,116, grante July 12, 1932.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a slip-cover for a foundation bag in which the flap closure for the bag is in the form of a pocket which may preferably receive a stiifening insert or be provided with other means to stiifen the flap closure. It is a further object of the invention to provide the inner side of the closure flap pocket with an extension to project down adjacent the foundation bag.

Other objects will be appar-ent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:

The handbag of Figs. 1 to 3 includes a cover I of any suitable material such as linen, and a foundation bag 2 which may be in any desired form and construction and preferably has a slide fastener closure 3. The cover I is preferably constructed by seaming the edges as indicated by the seams 4, and in this manner two pockets 5 and 6 are formed, the pocket 5 being adapted to receive the foundation bag 2 and the pocket 6 in the ap cover or closure 8 receiving a stiffening insert 1, if desired. It is obvious that if the cover I is made of a stiff material or if embroidery is stitched into the cover flap 8 through one or both layers thereof the insert may be dispensed with. The closure ap may be provided, if desired, with 55 any type of closure means such as a snap fastener -ora"loop 9 on `the flap and a button I0 .on the pocket 5, as shown -in Fig. 4.

`cover and the foundation bag 2. The pocket in the flap closure 8 may receive a stiffening insert or the flap closure may be so made that it is sufficiently rigid in itself.

In the construction shown in Figs. 5 and 6 the 15 flap closure pocket 8 has an extension I5 similar to the extension shown in Fig. 4. The pocket is adapted to receive a stiffening insert I6 to which a portion I'I of a snap fastener is secured, which projects through a perforation I8 in the linen of 20 the pocket. The other portion I9 is secured to the pocket 28 which receives the foundation bag 2. The snap fastener may be just as Well secured to the foundation bag and to the fabric of the ap closure, as desired, or any other type or com- 2 bination of closure may be provided. Also the flap closure may have any conguration, and, as shown in Fig. 5, an ornamental button ZI and a strap handle 22 may be provided.

The handbag of Figs. 'l to 9 includes a pocket 30 23, each side portion 24 and 25 of which has a flap closure 2B and 21. The pocket 23 is adapted to receive a foundation bag 2, if desired, and each side portion may be suitably provided with a button 28 and 29. Either one or the other flap 35 closure 26 or 21 may be used as the actual closure, the other closure as 21, Figs. 7 and 9, being turned into the pocket between the bag 2 and the side portion 24. Thus the two flap closures 26 and 2'I can be made in two diierent colors, depend- 40 ing upon the color desired, as in matching the particular color of a dress and the like. A suitable strap 30 is provided around the handbag, each end of which has a button hole therein to cooperate with the buttons 28 and 29. This 45 strap not only acts as a means for keeping the ap 26 or 21 closed, but it may be used as a handle for the handbag.

It is understood that any other fabric can be used instead of linen, such as leather and other materials or combinations, and furthermore the handbags may have any desired configuration including non-parallel edges, etc. Also the ap closures may have any configuration, and any designs and ornamentations may be applied where desired. Any type of closure may be secured to the handbag and a handle may be applied Wherever convenient or adaptable.

It is also to be understood that the various handbags illustrated on the drawings may or may not be provided With a foundation bag, as the materials of the cover may be stiffened as by starching or by other means so that the cover Will hold its shape.

We claim as our invention:

1. A handbag assembly of the envelope type comprising, in combination, a apless handbag body made of flexible material and provided with a slide fastener at its upper edge, and a r-emovable cover, said cover including a single large open pocket dimensioned to receive and enclose the bag body, one side only of said pocket being eX- tended to form a flap or closure for the handbag assembly, said flap being provided with a lining of similar material, and a backing between the flap and lining in order to add body to the ap or closure, said lining extending behind the bag body into the pocket.
