The objects of the invention are: First, to provide a detachable handle for a traveling bag or luggage.

Second, to provide such a handle which has a minimum of fastening devices.

Third, to provide a handle for luggage which is very superior owing to the absence of stitches, a smooth, soft, firm handle being secured.

Further objects and objects pertaining to details and economies will appear from the detailed description to follow.

A preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

1 is the main body piece of the handle made of a heavy piece of leather, bowed and convex on its under side and with a longitudinal channel extending from end to end on the top side, the structure being slightly tapered at the end and the cross sectional form clearly appearing in Fig. 4.

in the bottom of the channel on the top of the handle. These parts are molded and pressed very effectively together.

A transverse slot 3 is cut in each end of this covered handle part and an elongated connecting strap 4 is disposed in the channel with projecting ends, the same being tapered towards the ends, as clearly indicated where the ends appear in Figs. 2 and 5. In the channel at each end of the body portion are disposed small blocks of leather 5 which fill the channel about half way to the top. The connecting strap 4 is then disposed in the channel and the same is riveted at each end to the body of the handle by the rivet 6 through these filler blocks. The same may be secured in any other way, but rivets are preferred on account of their simplicity. The handle is very effective without the rivets, when the parts are effectively molded and the ends of the connecting strap 4 are threaded up through the slots 3 as indicated. The rivets hold the structure always in assembled shape, ready for attachment, but are not a necessity.

In the ends of the connecting strap 4 are formed slotted holes 7. These ends are of such length that they substantially meet at the middle of the handle when inserted back through the slots. The ends of the connecting strap are inserted down through Ds 8 and then inserted up through the slots 3. Their meeting ends are then secured together at, the center of the handle in the bottom of the channel formed therein, under; neath the central portion of the connecting strap 4.

This is accomplished by a connector 9.

This is formed with oppositely directed downwardly projecting heads 10 which are loosely overlying central portion of the said connecting strap 4.

Thus ahandle without stitching is effectively produced with the mere use of a pair of rivets. titchings might be inserted for ornamentation, but they are wholly unnecessary.

Of course the handle would be effective without providing the soft leather covering for it, but the means provided effectively retain the same in place without any stitching, making a perfectly smooth, finished handle of great strength and comfortable for the handling of traveling bags and lug7 ga e.

The handle as shown can be very readily attached and detached. If the ends of the connecting strap are permanently secured together, a highly desirable handle is produced.

I desire to state that the structure may be greatly modified without departing from my invention. I desire to claim-the same in its specific form as detachable, and I also desire to claim the same broadly as pointed out in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a detachable handle, the combina tion of a main body portion of leather formed into channel shape and tapered toward the ends, a soft leather covering: embracing the body portion, the whole being perforated with a transverse slot near each end, aleather block in the channel near each end of the handle, a connecting strap disposed in the said channel extending around the ends and upwardly through the said slots and meeting and joined at the center, a detachable connector at the center for'joining the ends of said connecting strap comprising a body portion with outwardly projecting heads connected by necks, and rivets through the said connecting strap and'body portion at each end of the handle.

2. In a detachable handle, the combination of a main body portion of leather formed into channel shape and tapered to ward the ends, a soft leather covering embracing the body portion, the whole being perforated with a transverse slot near each end, a leather block in the channel near each end of the handle, a connecting strap disposed in the said channel extending around the ends and upwardly through the said slots and meeting and joined at the center, and a detachable connector at the center for joining the ends of said connecting strap comprising a body portion with outwardly projecting heads connected by necks, the said connecting strap and body portion being joined at the ends of the handle.

In a detachable handle, the combination of a main body portion of leather formed into channel shape and tapered toward the ends and perforated with a transverse slot near each end, a leather block in the channel near each endof the handle, a connecting strap disposed in the said channel extending; around the ends and upwardly through the said slots and meeting and joined at the center, and a detachable connector at the center for joining the ends of said connecting strap comprising a: body portion with outwardly projecting heads connected by necks, the said connecting strap and body portion being joined at the ends. of the handle.

4. In a detachable handle, the combination of .a main body portion of leather formed into channel shape and'tapered toward the ends, and perforated with avtransverse slot near each end, a leather block in the channel'near each end of the handle, and a connecting strap disposed in the said channel extending around the ends and upwards ly through the said slots and meeting and joined at the center, the said connecting strap and body portion being joined at the ends ofthe handle.

5. In a detachable handle, the combination of a main body portion of leather formed into channel shape and tapered toward the ends, a soft leather covering em bracing the body portion, the whole being perforated with a transverse slot near each end, a connecting strap disposed in the; said channel extending around the ends and upwardly through the said'slots and meeting and joined at the center, a detachable connector at the center for joining the ends of said connecting strap comprising a body portion with outwardly projecting heads connected by necks, andrivets through the said connecting'strap and body portion at each end of the handle.

6. In a detachable handle,the. combination of a; mainbodyportion of. leather formed into channelshape and tapered toward the ends, a soft leather covering embracing, the body portion, the: whole being perforated. with a transverse slot near each end,- ajconnecting strap disposed in' the said channel extending around the ends andupwa-rdly through thesaid slots and meeting and joined at the center, a detachable connector atthe center for joining the ends of said connecting strap comprising a: body portion. with outwardly projecting heads connected by necks,,the said connecting-strap and body portion beingjoined at the ends of the handle. 7 I

8. In a detachable handle, the combination of a main body portion of leather formed into channel shape and tapered toward the ends, and perforated with a transverse slot near each end, and a connecting strap disposed in the said channel extending around the ends and upwardly through the said slots and meeting and joined at the center, the said connecting strap and body portion being joined at the ends of the handle.

9. In a detachable handle, the combination of amain body portion of leather formed into channel shape and tapered toward the ends, and perforated with a transverse slot near each end, a leather block in the channel near each end of the handle, and a connecting strap disposed in the said channel extending around the ends and upwardly through the said slots and meeting and joined at the center.

10. In a detachable handle, the combination of a main body portion of leather formed into channel shape and tapered toward the ends, and perforated with a transverse slot near each end, and a connecting strap disposed in the said channel extending around the ends and upwardly through the said slots and meeting and joined at the center.
