COMBINED CHAIR, PLATFORM, AND BECEPTAGLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 14,1911.
Application filed September 13, 1909. Serial No. 517,420.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORA L. CARNEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Chairs, Platforms, and Receptacles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numbers of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. Y
Dressmakers and tailors find it difficult and extremely wearisome to properly meas ure for a garment when the person measured is of the same fioor height as themselves and in consequence it has become quite customary for tailors, and sometimes for dressmakers to employ a platform or table upon which the customer stands while being measured and part of the time while being fitted. Sometimes for this purpose a stool or chair is employed, sometimes a bench and various devices have been employed for the purpose, any of which when not in use are unsightly and are usually inconvenient in the cutting or fitting room.
The object of this invention is to afford a cabinet to contain the cutting and fitting tools, forms, and accessories used by the operator in his trade, to afford also a convenient article of furniture such as a seat, couch or bench when not in use for cutting or fitting purposes, andto afford whenproperly adjusted, a flat table of considerable size and the proper height upon which the customer stands while being measured and while the garment is'being fitted.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described and more fully pointed out and defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an isometric perspective view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary detail illustrating the arrangement of the hinges. Fig. 4 is an end elevation similar to Fig. 2, but showing the device adjusted for use as a cutting or fitting table or platform. Fig. 5 is an enlarged face view of the hinges and the attachment thereof to the device.
As shown in the drawings: 1, indicates a box or cabinet which may be of any desired length or width, but of a depth or height to bring the top 2, thereof at the proper height for the workman. Said box or cabinet is supported upon casters 3, and the cover or lid 2, is secured on the top of the box or cabinet by means of hinges 1, to open for-- wardly to afford access to the interior.
Resting flat onthe cover or lid of the box or cabinet is the bottom board 5, of the seat embodied in this invention. This is of the same dimensions as the lid or cover of the box 1, and along the forward edges thereof said seat board is secured to said lid or cover 2, by means of a hinge 6. This is shown as of the piano hinge type extending the en tire length of the lid and of the seat board and attached to each by one of its leaves, said hinge being secured along the front edge of said cover and seat to permit the top of the seat to swing upwardly and outwardly, as shown in Fig. 4, and as shown, said seat board is provided with a back comprising end posts 7, each provided with a rubber pad 8, in its upper end to avoid injuring floors. As shown also, the seat is provided with end members or arms 9, though this is not indispensable.
The operation is as follows: In ordinary use, both the lid and seat may be swung upwardly and forwardly together, thus exposing the interior of the cabinet, and permitting models, tools, garments or materials to be placed therein when not in use. When so arranged, the device affords a desirable receptacle and also a seat which may be, of course, of the mission construction or of any desired type of furniture construction and when so adjusted, the device is practically undistinguishable from other articles of furniture.
When it is desired to make use of the device as a cutting or fitting table, the seat is turned over and forwardly and downwardly, as shown in Fig. 4, until the pads in the back thereof rest upon the floor, thereby affording a strong flat top table of large size. Of course, both the seat and the cover are hinged to swing in the same direction. Both may be lifted at the same time, if desired, to afford access to the contents, or the seat having been swung to its platform or table position, the cover 2, may be lifted to expose the contents of the box or cabinet. When restored in place, the device as a whole presents a broad, flat table having a length equal to the length of the seat or receptacle and a width equal to slightly more than double the width of the receptacle.
Of course, mere ornamentation is "1mm ter1al,'nor is the particular construction and V arrangement ofthe hinges indispensable.
I have shown but one embodiment ofmy invention and I therefore do not purpose limiting myself otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention: p The combination with a boX or receptacle, of a cover therefor hinged along the front edge thereof and having its forward edge projecting aishort distance beyond the hingto that ofthe receptacle, the whole operatmains stationary,
ing so that access may be had totlie receptacle by lifting the seat and cover in unison about the hinge of said cover when the seat isin normal position, or the seat may be swung about its hinge, while the cover reuntil the back rests upon the floor, said cover and seat 'conjointly forming a platform, in which position the cover may be lifted independently of the seat.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing, witnesses.
