Description
(NoModeL) 0. H. PARLIAMAN. BEST FOR INVALIDS.
Patented Jan. 23, 1894.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLOTTE l-I. PARLIAMAN, OF PALMYRA, NElV YORK.
REST FOR INVALIDS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters latent No. 513,246, dated January 23, 1894.
Application filed March 2,1891- Serial No. 383,883- on model.)
To 0. whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLOTTE H. PAR- LIAMAN, of Palmyra, in the county of WVayne, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rests for Invalids, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to the construction of rests for invalids.
The object of my invention is to provide an easy and convenient restfor invalids, which is inexpensive and durable in construction and of great utility.
My improvement consists in the several novel features of construction and operation hereinafter described and which are specifically set forth in the claims hereunto annexed.
It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the upper part of my improved rest'for invalids', having an adjustable table. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the rest; the table and foot support being omitted. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the rest, the back cushion and arm supports being omitted. Fig. 4 is aside elevation of the lower part of the rest; the chair support being in its open condition. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the chair support. in its closed condition. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the gearing for opening and closing the chair support for special use. Fig. 7 is a detail vertical section showing the means employed for connecting a table-leg with the chair support. Fig. 8 is a detail side elevation showing the adjustable connection for the back-support. Fig. 9 is/a rear view thereof.
A is the detachable and removable upper portion of the rest consisting of a horizontal frame 1 and an inclined canvas back 2 having side frames 2 hinged at 1 to the horizontal frame. The back is adjustably sup ported by braces 3 also hinged to the horizontal frame at- 1 and engaging the teeth of ratchet-bars 4 at their upper ends where they are provided with projecting pins 3? working in guide slots 2 in the side frames.
5 are arm rests, hinged at 5 to the side frames so as to assume the position shown in dotted lines, having supports 5 hinged at 5 to the arm rests and supported on the side frames.
B is a table or stand secured adjustably to the forward endvof the horizontal frame, by means, preferably, of legs 6 attached to dovetailed slides 6 adjustable in plates 1 having dovetailed grooves 1.
7 is a hinged top or leaf having on its under side a ratchet bar 8 whose teeth are engaged by a pawl 9, pivoted at 6 to a leg of the table or stand having a short arm 9 held down by a spring 10 whereby the pawl is caused to engage the ratchet-bar.
O is a collapsible base of the rest comprising the upper frame 0, and the lower frame 0 having an extension 0 provided with teeth 0 11 are toggle links by which these frames are connected and 12 are springs, whereby the upper frame is supported on the lower frame so as to cushion the upper portion on the base. Located between the upper and lower parts of the base are an upper crosspiece 13, having an opening 14 for special use, and a lower cross-piece 15. As a means for raising the upper cross-piece for the purpose of placing a receptacle under the opening 14 and for lowering it when the receptacle is removed, I provide a gearing mechanism which is constructed as follows. n I
16 is a horizontal main shaft journaled on the lower cross-piece having bevel pinions 17 thereon meshing with bevel gear wheels 18, which have gear wheels 19 meshing with pinions 20 on the lower ends of screw threaded shafts 21 working in sockets in the upper crosspiece. The shaft is operated by means of hand shafts 22, provided with handles 23 at their upper ends and having bevel pinions 24 at their lower ends meshing with bevel pinions 25 on the main shaft.
D is a foot warmer or support located upon the extension of the lower frame of the base.
It may be adjusted on its support and is secover, so that warming irons may be placed therein or it may'form a receptacle for the patients slippers, or other articles.
From the above description it will be seen that my rest may be taken apart and stored in a knock down shape in a minimum amount of space. It will also be observed that by placing casters or rollers under the base, it may be readily removed from one location to another. It will further be observed that the adjustable table or support may be moved and removed at pleasure and the top may be adjusted at any angle by means of the pawl as shown. It will also be observed that by means of the ratchet and inclined brace, located at the rear of the back the same may be adjusted at any angle of incline desired.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination of the base comprising the upper and lower frames, the upper cross; piece, having an opening, and thelowercrosspiece, located between the upper and lower frames, and mechanism whereby the upper cross-piece is elevated and lowered; substantially as described.
2. The combination of the base comprising the upper and lower frames, the upper crosspiece, having an opening, and the lower crosspiece, located between the upper and lower frames, and mechanism whereby the upper cross-piece is elevated and lowered consisting of a main shaft, journaled on the lower crosspiec'e,havingbevel pinions, bevel gear wheels located on the lower cross-piece, having gear wheels, and the screw threaded shafts working in the upper cross-piece having pinions on their lower ends and means for rotating the main shaft; substantially as described.
3. The combination of the base comprising the upper and lower frame, the upper crosspiece, having an openin g, and the lower crosspiece, located between the upper and lower frames, and mechanism whereby the upper cross-pieceis elevated and lowered consisting of a main shaft journaled on the lower cross-piece, having bevel pinions, bevel gear wheels, located on the lower cross-piece having gear-wheels, and the screw threaded shafts working in the upper cross-piece having pinions on their lower ends, hand shafts provided with handles at their upper-- ends, and the bevel pinions whereby the hand shafts are connected with the main shaft; substantially as described.
4. The combination of the basecomprising the upper and lower frames, the toggle-links whereby the frames are connected together, the upper cross-piece, having an opening, and the lower cross'piece, located between the upper and lower frames, and mechanism whereby the upper cross-piece is elevated and. lowered; substantially as described.
5. lhe combination of the base comprising the upper and lower frames, the springs whereby the upper frame is supported on the lower frame, the upper cross-piece, having an opening, and the lower cross-piece, located between the upper and lower frames, and mechanism whereby the upper cross-piece is elevated and lowered; substantially as described.
6. The combination of the base comprising the upper and lower frames, the toggle-links, whereby the frames are connected together, the springs whereby the upper frame is supported on the lower frame, the upper crosspiece, having an opening and the lower crosspiece, located between the upper and lower frames, and mechanism whereby the upper cross-piece is elevated and lowered; substantially as described.
7. The combination of the base comprising the upper and lower frames, means by which the upper frame is supported on the lower frame and the detachable and removable upper portion comprising a horizontal frame, a back provided with side frames hinged to the horizontal frame, and braces hinged to the horizontal frame and supporting the back adjustably; substantially as described? 8. The combination of the basecomprising the upper and lower frames, meansby which the upper frame is supported on the lower frame, and the detachable and removable upper portion comprising the horizontal frame and a table having legs adapted to slide on the horizontal frame; substantially as described.
