' This 'vention relates to articles that are designed to be used either as beds or chairs by persons who may have sufiered fractures of bones or by invalids, the invention having z particular reference to articles of this character that may be adjusted to suit the limbs of different persons which may be different in length either above or below the knees, the invention referring also to desk attachments of the combined bed and chair above mentioned.

Objects of the invention are to provide a combined fracture-bed and inva'lids chair general use in voflices of physicians or surgeons, in hospitals, or in dwellings; to provide an adjustable support for one having a fracture or fractures, which support may be instantly changed fromasit'ting position to a fracture-bed with convenient adjustable footsupports for the patient, adapted to either support the feet .orto be used to stretch or extend the limb-muscles or to prevent contraction of the muscles, :and to provide a ient to the patient or invalid.

A winding-drum L, having aratchet-wheel M secured thereto, is journaled between the lower ends of the bars J and J, the ratchetwheel being provided with a pawl 1, whereby to hold the drum, the drum bein provided with a crank s for its operation. referably the pawl is mounted on a rod 25, that extends between the two bars J and J. A foot-rail N is mounted slidingly on the bars J and J and supports foot-plates O and 0, having slots a therein, through which straps may be extended for holding the plates against the feet of a patient. The foot-rail has clampplates 1; at its ends, that extend under and against the bars J and J, and a bolt to and thumb-nut a: are provided for binding the foot-rail to the bars by means of the clampplates. When the thumb-nuts are slackened, the foot-rail may be moved, and it may be drawn toward the drum L by means of cables y, that are connected with the foot-rail and wound about the drum.

A combined seat and back P is formed of flexible material, such as canvas, and serves also as a support for the lower parts of the limbs of the patient, the seat ortion of the element extending over the ro ler I and beyond, as a leg-support, a suitable distance between the bars J and J, a lacing 8 connecting the upper end of the back to the rod '5 and lacings 9 connecting the sides of the seat and back to the pe s 'm, there being a lacing 1O connecting the Jower end of the leg-support to the rod 25. The desk R may be variously constructed in detail, there being one or more receptacles therein and one or more lids S hinged 011 the top thereof, each lid having a knob 14 and a fastener 15. The desk is provided with a pair of pivotal supports T and T at its rear end, adapted to be inserted in the notches g of the side bars E and E, and a pair of pivots U and U are attached to the forward end of the desk, to which a pair of curved props V and V are connected, that have studs W and W attached thereto, adapted to be inserted into the notches h of the side bars, so that the desk may be removed from the side bars, or it may be pro ped up in inclined position, as indicated in roken lines in Fig. 1, to hold books thereon or for like purposes.

In practical use the apparatus may be moved about on a floor by means of its rollers B and B it may be laced uprightly, as in he sitting posture, or it in Fig. 4, so that the rollers would bear upon the floor forwardly of the parts of the rockers that may bear on the floor, and the prop F is i to be adjusted so as to bear upon the floor and support the head part of the bed so arranged, or the apparatus may be rolled over suiiiciently to prevent the rollers from having contact with the floor, and therefore be sup ported by the rockers and the prop. When a patient having a fracture is placed u on the combined seat and back P, the roller should be adjusted so that the knees may be properly supported thereby, in some cases it being desirable to move the roller forwardly sufficiently to extend the large muscles somewhat. The patients feet are to be placed upon the foot-plates O and O while the footrail N may be secured fixedly, or the latter may be rendered movable and the feet may be bound to the foot-plates, so that the limbs below the knees may be slightly stretched or the muscles thereof extended to suit the conditions of the fracture. The roller I and the lower ends of the frame-bars J and J may be adjusted to contribute to the comfort of an invalid, and the combined seat and back may be rendered more or less flexible by adjustments of the supporting-lacings thereof.

Having thus described the invention. what is claimed as new is- 1. A combined bed and chair including a main frame comprising a pair of rockers each provided with a roller approximately at the middle thereof, a pair of combined seat-rails and back-posts attached to the ends of the rockers, an adjustable foot= late frame, and a flexible combined seat an back supported adjustably bythe main frame and t e footplate frame.

2. A combined bed and chair including a pair of seat-rails and supports therefor, a pair of back-posts suitably supported,a pair of journal-boxes mounted movably on the seat-rails, means for moving and controlling the journal-boxes, a roller mounted in the journal-boxes, a foot-plate frame pivotally connected to the journal-boxes, and a flexible combined seat and back supported by the seat-rails and back-posts'and extending over the roller and connected with the foot-plate frame.

A combined fracture-bed and invalids chair including a main frame having a pair of rockers provided each with a roller, a pair of seat-rails and back-posts secured to the rockers, a pair of side bars secured to the seatrails and also to the back-posts, and X- braces connected with the two sides of the main frame; a prop pivoted'to the backposts, a pair of j ournal-boxes mounted movably on the side rails, a roller mounted in the journal-boxes, a pair of screws mounted on the side rails and controlling the journalboxes, a foot-plate frame pivotally connected with the journal-boxes and provided with a winding-drum having a ratchet-and-pawl lock, a pair of foot-plates mounted movably on the foot-plate frame .and provided with cables connected to the winding-drum, a flexible combined seat and back mounted on the main frame and extending over the roller and connected With the foot-plate frame, and a desk mounted removably and adjustably on the pair of side bars of the main frame.

8. In a combined bed and chair, the combination of -a main frame having a pair of rockers, a pair of seat-rails and back-posts provided with pegs and secured to the ends of the rockers,and X-braces connected to the two sides of the main frame, a pair of journal-boxes supported adjustably and suitably guided, a roller mounted. in the journalboxes, a pair of screws suitably supported and controlling the journal-boxes, a footplate frame pivotally connected with the journal-boxes and provided with an end support, a pair of foot-plates mounted adjustably on the foot-plate frame, and a flexible combined seat and back connected with the pegs and also with the foot-plate frame and extending over the roller. 2
