UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSIAH J. REYNOLDS, OF CORINTH, MISSISSIPPI.
COUNTER OR TABLE STOOL.
SPECIEICAJIIOIlr forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,512, `dated August 21, 1883. Application filed January 30, 1883. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom il; may concern:
Be it known that I, JosIAH J. REYNOLDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corinth, in the county of Alcorn and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chair or Stool Attachments, of which 'the following is a speciication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to counter or table stools, and it consists in certain improvements in the construction-of the saine, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a stool with my improvements applied to a table. Fig. 2 is a side view of the stool, part being shown in section. Fig. 3 illustrates in plan the spring attachment.
A designates the/top forming the seat of the stool, the same being of' any suitable form, and provided with a stem, a, projecting downward, as shown.
B indicates a stock or vertical stem, to the lower end of which the legs of the stool are fastened. l
C is a case which receives the stem a in its upper end and the stem B through its lower extremity, the lower part of the case being reduced in size, as shown, to form a tubular passage, '1), for the stem B, and also a bott-om or foundation, c, within, for the purpose hereinafter stated. The stem B passes upward through the tubular part I) into the case C a suitable distance, and has fastened to its upper extremity a disk or cap, d, which iits loosely in the case, and is supported by a number of springs, e, which rest on the bottom c,
as shown in the drawings.
D is a horizontal arm, to one end of which the case C is made fast,'the opposite end being hinged to a leg, E, or other suitable part of a table or counter. The hinge has a downward projection, j', passing through a fixed loop, y, and a vertical rod, 71, passing through a iixed loop, The upper extremity of the rod is provided with a crank, k, which is connected with a spring, m, attached to the table usually within the fra-me.
Vhen properly constructed and secured to the table, the stool, when unoccupied, is held by the arm D, so that it does not touch the floor, (indicated by x in Fig. 2,) and it is retained in position under the edge of the table by the spring Im. Vhen a person desires to occupy the stool, he pulls it forward and sits down, and the stool is thus'pressed to the door, the springs e yielding to the pressure of the seat against the cap d., and the case C being held iirmly at its usual elevation by the arm D. When the person sitting rises from the stool, the latter is immediately raised slightly from the iloor again by the springs c in the ease G, and is also drawn back to its position under the edge of the table by the spring m, connected with crank As will be observed, the stool, when unoccupied, is held and supported by the arm D a little above the floor; but when occupied it rests on the floor, 'which sustains the weight ofthe stool and occupant.
I claim- 1. In a counter-stool, the seat provided with a stem, c., and the base having stem B, case C,
recessed, as described, and ln ving springs therein connected with the stein of t'he base, substantially as described, in combination with a counter, the case being connected tothe counter, substantially as' set forth, whereby it will be held so that the feet of the base will normally be raised from the door, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A counter-stool having a seat provided with a stem, a, and a base having a stein, B, with cap d, in combination with ease C, inclosing the stems, and having springs c, a hinged supporting-arm connected with the case and the counter, and provided with rod h, a crank, k, an'd a spring iixed to the counter and connected with the crank, whereby the stool is carried beneath the counter, substantially as set forth and described.
In testimony wh erect' I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
.TOSIAH J. REYNOLDS.
