To all whom t may concern.' v
Be it known that I, J oHN A. J ONES.,- a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain newV and useful Improvements in Garbage-Cans, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to improvements in' garbage cans and the like, and the object of the invention is to provide a device of the character specified adapted for use on side walks and in public parks, wherein foot operable mechanism is provided for opening the lid of the can, which is normally spring held closed, andwherein means is provided for limiting the opening movement of the door.

In the present `embodiment of the inven-v tion an outer inclosing casing 1 is provided, the said casing having depending legs 2 for supporting the same and being substantially rectangular in cross section and having a rounded top 3, as shown. The rear wall of the casing 1 is cut away to receive the tray or drawer '4 which seats within the casing 1, resting upon the bottom of the said casing and being supported by a depending rib 5 on the drawer andy by angle plates 6 on the bottom of the casing 1. At the'cut away portion in the rear wall of the casing 1 there is an upstanding rib 7 within which the tray or drawer 4 seats and the said tray or drawer is supported with its bottom spaced apart from the bottom of the casing 1 by the rib 5 and the angle plates 6. This tray or drawer has handles 8, by means of which it may be inserted and withdrawn from the casing 1, and the rear or outer wall of the drawer has an extension 9 which lits upon the. commencement of the curved top 3 of the casing 1 as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
This extension 9 has a slot through which passes a staple 10 on the curved top and a in cross section and the rear edge of the door` 13 extends through a slot orV passage 15 in the front wall of the hood into the hood, as shown. At its rear `edge thev door has eyes 16 vwhich are engaged by fiexible members 17, as, for instance, cords or wires, and the lower ends of theseV flexible members are connectedto the arms 18 of a yoke shaped lever,

The arms of the lever are pivoted to the rear legs of the casing 1, as indicated at 20, and coil springs 21 are interposed in the length of the flexible member.
The yoke 18-19 is beneath the bottom of the casing 1, and the flexible members 17 extend downwardly between the side walls of the tray and those of the casing. It will be evident that when downward pressure is made upon the body 19 of the yoke, the rear end of the door will be drawn downwardly, swinging through the passage in the curved top 3 of the casing 1, as shown in Fig. 3, and the door will be swung away from over the opening 12, to permit the insertion of material in the tray.
A plate 22 is secured to the rear edge of the door, by means of the eyes 16, the said rear edge being reduced or cut away at each end, as shown at 23 in Fig. 5, to enter the slot or passage 15, and the shoulders formed at the inner ends of the cut away portion act as limiting members for limiting the movement of the door into the hood. The forward edge of this plate 22 is bent upwardly, as indicated at 24, to form a flange or rib for engaging the front wall of the hood, to limit the outward movement of the door, as shown in Fig. 1. The door is thus balanced on the forward edge of the opening which the hood 14 covers, and it may be swung into the open position of Fig. 3 or permitted to fall into the closed position of Fig. 1.
In use, the parts are arranged as shown in Fig. 1. When it is desired to insert material in the tray, the foot is placed upon the Y body 19 of the yoke and downward pressure is made. This swings the rear end of the door downwardly, lifting the door fromover the opening 12 and permitting the insertion of the said material. A receptacle comprising a vcasing having its rear wall out away, a tray seated within the easing and having at its rear edge a depending rib resting upon the bottom of the easing and the easing having an upstanding flange engaging outside of the rib, and having means for supporting the front end of the tray spaced above the bottom of the easing,` the rear wall, of the tray having a hasp and the casing having a staple for engagement by the hasp to prevent upward movement of the, rear end of the tray to disengage the same from the upstanding flange and the staplebeingV adapted to receive a lock to lock the tray in the receptacle.
