FILE-CABINET.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK L. G. STRAUBEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Green Bay, in the county of Brown and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in File-Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in a cabinet with a receptacle in which sheet music, as well as letters and commercial papers, can be filed vertically.
The object of my invention is to provide a means for conveniently filing such sheets or papers and to give ready reference and access to same after having been filed. I attain this object by means of the vertical filing device illustrated in the accompany ing drawings in which Figure 1 is'a sectional view of the cabinet when closed and showing the interior of one side. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same device with the top raised. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the compressing device.
Similar figures refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
1 is the base, 2 the back, 3 one of the sides, 4 the front, and 5 the cover of the filing cabinet. The cover 5 is hinged at 6 and when open assumes a similar position to that shown in Fig. 2. The front 4 of the cabinet is hinged at the bottom at 7, and at the upper portion of each of the two sides at 8 it has pivotally attached thereto, one on each side, the front ends of connecting rods 9. 10 is a lever attached to the side of cover 5 and is pivotally attached to connecting rod 11. The arrangement of connecting rod 9 and lever 10 is such that when the cover 5 is raised the front 4 of the cabinet will be thrown forward. The object of this arrangement being to loosen up the contents of the cabinet so that they may be readily inspected. Cover 5 is held open by a bar 12 which is pivotally attached at 13 to the side of the cover and loosely held to the side 3 of the cabinet with a pin which operates in a slot 14 of the bar 12. At the lower end of this slot a notch 15 is made on the upper side and when the cover is raised to its full weeten i are st m.

height this notch drops on the pin thus holding the top open. near the front. of the cover and by which the lever 12 may be raised from the pin which will allow the cover to be dropped in place.
On the bottom 17 of the cabinet is slidably mounted an adjustable follower 18 against which the inclosed sheets rest. Said follower has a base 19 and a clutch 20 which engages a rod 21 in a slot in the base 17. By means of this clutch arrangement this follower can be placed at any desired point front or back, in the tiling cabinet, providing for the filing of a small or a large quantity of sheets as desired.
22 is a compressor which is pivotally attached to the hinged front of the cabinet at 23, and is operated by arms 24 and projections which engage a slot 25 at either side of the cabinet. VVhen'the top is open this compressor is forced back against the hinged front 4 of the cabinet. Then the cabinet is closed the engagement of the arm 24 with the slot 25 forces the upper part of the com-- pressor forward against the filed sheets, thus compressing them and pushing them out of the way of the descending cover.
The form of the compressor shown here may be varied without afiecting my rights, as for instance the arms 24 may be pivotally attached to the sides 3 of the cabinet and only bear against the inside of the hinged front 4 at 23. The compressor is shown here as a flat surface, as a board. It may also be made in the form of a loop of metal or other material.
The cover connection of this cabinet with the hinged front and the sliding follower are similar to the form shown in my Patent No. 812,962 granted Feb. 20, 1906. I therefore do not claim specifically upon these features alone, but
lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a filing cabinet a case having a hinged front, a compressor pivotally at tached to the hinged front, arms on either side of the compressor engaging slots in the sides of the case, and so arranged that when 16 is a bar extending to the hinged front is closed the compressor is is closed the upper portion of the compressor thrown backward against the contents of the is forced backward against the contents of 10 case. the case.
2. In a filing cabinet a case having a hinged front a compressor pivotally at- FREDERICK STRAUBEL' tached to the sides of the case, and adapted Vitnesses: to bear against the inside of the hinged front TILLIE A. GLUNE, in. such manner that When the hinged front G. WV. STRAUBEL.
