PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES O. ALLEN, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
DRAWER FOR FURNITURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,770, dated June 14, 1892.
.Lpplication filed February 16, 1892. Serial No.42l,'709. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES O. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drawers for Furniture; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in drawers for furniture, cabinets, and other like articles; and its object is to provide such drawers with certain new and useful features hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of adevice embodying my invention with the drawer open; Fig. 2, the same with the drawer closed; Fig. 3, a modified construction of my device in vertical section with the drawer open; Fig. 4, the same with the drawer closed, and Fig. 5 a detail of the front spring shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Like letters refer to like parts in all of the figures.
A represents any suitable case which may be made to contain any convenient number of drawers.
B is the side of the drawer, only one side being shown. These sides are made concave at the bottom and rest upon the case, so that as the drawer is pulled out the front will drop down, as shown.
The bottom 0 of the drawer is made to move freely upward within the sides and end of the same,-and is attached only to the back D of the same by means of any suitable hinges. Said bottom thus rests upon the bottom of the opening in the case and slides forward on the same as the drawer is pulled out, thus rising relatively within the sides and front as the same descend. This throws the contents of said drawer upward above the sides and front, where said contents are more accessible.
In Figs. 1 and 2, G represents the contents of the drawer, which may be envelopes, filewrappers, or like articles standing on end. These are supported in place at the front by a wire spring, which is pivoted to the bottom 0 at K K, and rising and curving upward against the contents 0 turns downward at L L, and, descending, curves oppositely against the front of the drawer and is joined at the middle, where it engages the contents G near the bottom as the front of the drawer descends. This spring slides upward on the inner surface of the drawer-front, and turning outward at the top tends to push the bottom of the contents G backward, and also permits of separating the wrappers, envelopes, or other articles G to examine or remove any one of the same. At the back of the said contents is a vertical septum E, which is movable to ward and from the front of the drawer and pressed forward by a spring F, to the front end of which said septum is attached, the rear end of said spring being attached to the back end D of the drawer.
In the under side of the upper part of the case A are depressionsA',with which the upper rear corner of the drawer engages. This tends to stop the drawer at this point and lowers the front end of the same still farther.
In the modified construction shown in Figs. 3 and 4, G represents card-board, blanks, sheet-music, or other like articles adapted to lie flat upon the bottom of the drawer, which drawer in this case is made shallow so that the bottom 0 comes level with the top of the front of said drawerwhen the same is opened. The edges of said card-board, blanks, &c., are thus accessible. The bottom 0 may also be cut away at intervals in its front edge, as at I, to let the fingers pass beneath the contents G. This construction also enables me to use the bottom of a drawer so constructed as a surface to write upon, or for other like purposes, the front and sides dropping down out of the way to permit such use, which is often very convenient.
From the foregoing the operation of my device will be readily understood without further description.
WVhat I claim is- 1. A drawer having sides made concave or otherwise reduced at their lower edges and a bottom detached from the sides and front and pivotally secured to the back of said drawer, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a drawer, substantially as described,a case, as A, to receive the same, having depressions, as A, to engage the rear corners of said drawer, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a drawer having sides made concave or otherwise reduced at their edges and a bottom detached from the sides and front and pivotally secured to the back, a support pivoted to the front of the bottom, engaging the front of the drawer and movable thereon, substantially as described.
4. In combination with a drawer having a bottom detached and vertically movable at the front, a spring pivoted to said bottom, said spring engaging the front and movable thereon, a movable septum in said drawer, and a spring engaging said septum and the back of the drawer, substantially as described.
5. In combination with a drawer having a bottom movable at the front, a support for the contents of said drawer, said support pivoted at its lower end to the said drawer-bottom, engaging the drawer-front and movable thereon, said support also having a spring, as H,
engaging said contents near the bottom, sub stantially as described.
6. The combination of a drawer having a bottom movable at its front, asupport pivoted at its lower end to said bottom, said support engaging the drawer-front and movable thereon and provided with a spring engaging the contents of said drawer near the bottom, a movable septum engaging the rear of said contents, and a spring pressing said septum forward, substantially as described.
7. The combination of a case, as A, and a drawer having sides with concave lower edges resting upon the bottom of said case, and a bottom to said drawer, resting upon the bottom of .said case at the front and pivotally secured to the rear of said drawer, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
