To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. FRIOKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkstands,

erence being had thereinto the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to improvements in. inkstands, and has for its object the provision of means for facilitating the closing of the cover by the insertion of an object into the stand.

Another object of the invention is the provision of means for automatically closing the cover of an inkstand, when an object, 'as for instance, a pen, pencil, or the like, is inserted into said stand, and said means adapted to automatically open or raise the cover when the object is removed from the stand.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal, sectional view of the device depictedin Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of the cover-actuating device.

. Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the base of the stand, and 2 the sides thereof. The base 1 is of such weight weight, and also permits an object 3 (pen, pencil, or the like) to be removed from the stand, without disturbing or moving the same upon its support. The base 1 is provided, preferably, near its center with a cutout portion or recess 4 formed in its under face, and with an a erture 5. The top 6 of the stand is provide with a central aperture,

tacle 6, whichreceptacle 6 is provided with a flange 7 and with a depending threaded bolt or member 8. The threaded bolt or member 8 is fixedly secured at its upper end, preferlower end extends through the aperture 5 and into the cut-out portion or recess 4; upon the lower end of bolt 8, there is placed a Washer 9, and a nut 10 is threaded upon said bolt.

It will be noted that owing to the flanged said bracket comprises a base 13 and a vertical body portion 14. The body portion 14 is open at its front end. Extending through the front end of the body portion 14 is an extension 15 of the cover 16. The extension 15 is pivotally mounted, at 17, upon the body portion 14, and said extension 15 is rovided with a rear bifurcated end 18. T e body portion .14 is open at its bottom; the open bottom of said body portion registers with an elongated aperture 19 in the top 6. A link 20 is positioned in the bifurcated end 18 of the extension 15 and pivotally connected thereto, at 21. The link 20 is, therefore, connected to the extension 15 behind the pivot 17 of said extension, and in a plane above the horizontal plane in which pivot 17 is positioned. There ore, when the cover 16 is open, by pushing or forcing upward on the link 20, said pivot 17 acts as a fulcrum and facilitates the closing of the cover 16 to its horizontal position, shown in Figs. 1 and 2. It is to be understood that the normal position of the cover 16 is open or vertical. A forked or yoke-lever 22 is pivotally mounted upon a bar 23, which bar 23 is carried by the vertical depending ends 24 of a substantially U-shaped member or bracket 25. The bracket 25 is secured, at 26, to the underface of the cover or top 6. The lever 25 has its sides positioned upon opposite sidesof the ink-well or receptacle 6, and said sides ter minate in parallel extensions 27, between which extensions 27 the link 20 is pivotally mounted, at 28. The pivot 28 of the lever and link is a bolt, which extends through the parallel extensions 27 and the lower end of the link 20. The parallel extensions 27 are secured in a spaced position by means of a block or filling means 29, which block or V at 32, to the under face of the top 6, and the same is bent down near its outer end in engagement with one of the sides of lever 22, so that there is normally exerted a downward pressure upon the lever for holding the cover 16 open. It will be noted that the lever 22 can be freely moved upon its fulcrum, consituted by the bar 23, as said lever will have a sliding movement upon the stationary spring 31.

The means for actuating the lever for swinging the same upon its fulcrum, comprises a tubular or hollow guide 33, which is provided at its upper end with a flange 34, resting in engagement with the upper face of the top 6. The body of the hollow guide 33 extends through an aperture formed near the front end of the top 6, and said body is pro vided with inclined or beveled edges 35 forming an opening at the side of the hollow member, whereby the object or pencil or pen 3 will be permitted to engage the depending arm or finger 36 before the lower end of the object or pencil has reached the bottom of the hollow guide 33. The arm or finger 36 is formed of stiff material, and is fixedly secured, at its upper end, to portion 37 of the lever, whereby when the object or pen 3 is forced downward in the hollow guide 33, the same will come in contact with the outer curved face of the arm or finger 36 and pass over the same, causing said arm or finger to have a slight downward and inward movement, which will swing the lever 22 upon its fulcrum, and cause the link 20 to be forced upward or raised, thereby closing the cover 16 of the ink well. I have found from practical experience, that while the movement of the arm or finger 36 is very slight, still there is sufficient movement for easily swinging the cover 16 to a closed position.

It is to be noted that when the pen 3 is in the holder or guide 33, the cover 16 will be closed upon the ink-well or receptacle 6 and the pen will be placed out of the Way, as this peculiar structure of the ink-well constitutes a holder for the pen, pencil, or any other object which is capable of being placed in the hollow guide or holder 33. Furthermore, as long as the pen 3 is in the guide or holder 33, said pen constitutes a lock, whereby the cover 16 is retained in its closed position. Through the medium of the spring, as soon as the pen 3 is removed from the guide or holder 33, the cover 16 will be automatically moved to an open or substantially vertical position.

What I claim is:

1. In an inkstand, the combination with a support, of a cover movably mounted upon said support, an arm carried by said support, means connecting said arm to said cover, and a hollow guide carried by said support contiguous to said arm, whereby when an object is inserted into said guide and in engagement with said arm, said arm and cover will be moved upon said support.

2. In an inkstand, the combination with a support, a cover pivotally mounted upon said support of lever means provided with a depending, curved arm carried by said support, means connecting said lever means to said cover a hollow guide carried by said support contiguous to said arm, and said guide provided with a lower end opening contiguous to the lower portion of said arm, whereby when an object is inserted into said guide and in engagement with said arm, said lever and cover will be swung upon said support.

3. In an inkstand, the combination with a support, a movable cover carried by said support, 'of a hollow guide extending through a portion of said support and provided at one side with an inclined end or bottom producing a sideopening, and means connected to said cover and positioned contiguous to said inclined end and being adapted to be operated by the insertion of an object into said guiding means.

4. In an inkstand, the combination with a body, provided with a top, of a horizontal bracket provided with a body, said body pro vided with a front open end, a cover provided with an extension, the extension projecting through the open end of and having its rear end terminating in said bracket, means pivotally securing said extension to said bracket, and means engaging said extension for swinging said cover upon said bracket.

5. In an inkstand, the combination of a body and a detachable top, a receptacle provided With a flange positioned upon said top,

said flange in engagement with said top, said receptacle provided with a threaded ortion 5 extending through a portion of said body, a nut threaded upon said threaded portion and securing said body and top together, and a movable cover for closing said receptacle.

6. In an inkstand, the combination of a body provided with a base, a detachable top carried by said body, said base provided with a cut-out portion formed in its under face, a receptacle provided with a flange resting upon said top, said receptacle provided with a threaded extension projecting through a portion of said base and into the cut-out portionthereof, a nut positioned within said cut-out portion and threaded upon said extension, and a movable top for closing said receptacle. 7

7. In an inkstand, the combination with a support, a pivoted cover carried by said support, of a hollow guide carried by said supportand having an open bottom, lever means pivotally mounted upon said support and provided with a depending extension, the extension projecting beyond the open bottom of said guiding means, means connecting said lever means to said cover, whereby when an 130 article or device is inserted vertically into said guiding means, and in engagement with said depending extension, the lever will be swung upon the support and the cover will be raised or opened.

8. In an inkstand, the combination with a support, of a pivoted cover carried by said support, a vertical guide provided with an open bottom, carried by said support, lever means provided with an extension extending under the open bottom of said guiding means, and means connecting said lever means to said cover, whereby when the extension of the lever means is engaged by an object in the guiding means, said cover will be moved upon the support.

9. In an inkstand, the combination with a body provided with a top, of a cover provided with a straight, horizontal extension, means pivotally connecting the straight extension near its lower portion to said top, lever means, and means connecting said lever means to the straight extension above the first-mentioned connecting means.

10. In an inkstand, the combination with a support, of a cover provided'with a horizontal extension, positioned above said support, the extension bifurcated at its rear end,

.means extending through the extension near its lower edge and pivotally connecting the same to said top, lever means, and means connected near one end to the lever means and positioned in the bifurcated portion of said extension and pivotally connected to the bifurcated portion near its upper edge and above the first-mentioned connecting means, the bifurcated portion performing the function of a guide for the means connecting the lever and the extension.

11. In an inkstand, the combination with a support, a cover movably mounted upon saidv support, of lever means provided with a depending arm, carried by said support,

means connecting said lever means to said support, a hollow guide carried by said support contiguous to said arm, said guide opening upon said arm, whereby an article inserted into and parallel with said guide and in engagement with said arm will actuate the lever means and move the cover upon the support.

12. In an inkstand, the combination with a support, of a depending substantially U- shaped bracket secured to said support, a lever provided with parallel sides positioned between the sides of the bracket, means pivotally connecting the lever to said sides, said lever provided with an outwardly-projecting portion, a hollow guide provided with an end opening upon the outwardly-projecting portion of said lever, a movable c'over carried by said support, means pivotally connecting said cover to said lever means, whereby when an article is inserted into said guide and in engagement with the outwardly-projecting portion of said lever, said cover will be actuated.

13. In an inkstand, the combination with a support, and a movable cover carried by said support, of lever means provided with a depending outwardly-extending portion, carried by said support, a hollow guide opening contiguous to its lower end upon the out- Wardly-extending portions, and means connecting said lever means to said cover whereby, when an article is inserted into said guide and in engagement with the outwardly-extending portion of said lever means, .said cover will be moved upon the support.
