COMBINED PAPER-WEIGHT AND PEN-EXTRAGTOR.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL O. WICKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Las Animas, in the county of Bent, State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Paper-lVeights and Pen-Extractors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in stationary articles and has particular reference to paper weights.
It has for its object the provision of a device of that kind provided with an attachment by means of which rusty and used pens may be readily extracted from their holders.
Another object is the provision of a device provided with a hinged bottom which may be readily opened and the old pens removed from the device.
With these and other objects in view as will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of the device may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of the specification :-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view with a portion of the cover removed. Fig. 4 is a sectional plan view on the line 4l4l of Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to designate corresponding parts throughout.
In the present instance the casing is shown constructed of metal and octagonal in contour. It must be understood however, that I am not to be limited to this specific shape, since it will be readily understood from what will appear later, how the device might be cylindrical or any other shape without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The casing is designated in general by the numeral 5 and at what will subsequently be termed its lower end is provided with an inwardly extending flange 6. The flange 6 corresponds to the shape of the casing and in the present instance is shown to be substantially octagonal. The side wall of the casing is designated by the numeral 7 and the top or cover by the numeral 8. The top or cover 8 inclines inwardly from the upper edge of the side wall 7 to the center of the casing and is centrally provided with a vertical opening 9.
Formed in the inner face of the side wall 7 of the casing and at the upper end thereof is a lug or ledge 10. The upper face of this lug or ledge 10 inclines downwardly and inwardly from the upper edge of the side wall 7 and formed in the base of the top 8 is a crescent-shaped opening 11. It might here be stated that the face of the ledge 10 is serrated and convex and lies in a plane with the lower side or convexed edge of the crescent-shaped opening 11. The opening 11 is of a size to receive the usual pen point so that when the latter is inserted into the opening 11 its concaved face will bear on the convexed surface of the ledge 10.
Formed on the inner face of the top 8 and at a point diametrically opposite the opening 11 is a short channeled shaped casing 12. This member is formed with a pair of side walls 13 and 1 1 which depend from the top 8 with their lower edges in alinement with the opening 11, and connecting the lower edges of the side walls 13 and let is a bottom plate 15. Pivoted between the side walls 13 and 1a is one end of a lever 16, the opposite or free end of which extends to a point adjacent the opposite side of the cover 8 whence it terminates in a down wardly inclined extension 17 which overhangs and is in a vertical plane with the lug or ledge 10. The extension of the clownwardly inclined extension 17 is serrated as shown at 18 so that when it is forced clownwardly the serrations 18 will engage with the serrations of the upper face of the ledge 10. The lever 16 is pressed upwardly so that the serrations 18 at its free extremity will normally lie in a plane with the upper side of the opening 11 and is yieldingly held in this position by means of a leaf spring 19, one terminal of which is secured to the outer face of thebottom plate 15 of the channeledshaped casing 12 and the opposite end of which bears on the lower side of the lever 16.
Rising from the intermediate portion of the lever 16 and extending through the central opening E) in the top 8 is the shank portion 20 of a push rod, the upper end of which terminates in an enlarged boss or head 21, disposed a considerable distance above the upper face of the top 8. Vith this construction it is obvious when the boss or head 21 is depressed, the lever 16 will be likewise depressed and its free end brought into e11- gagement with the ledge 10, so that a pen point placed in the opening 11 and bearing on the ledge 10, before the lever 16 is depressed, will be held clamped by the lever whereby the holder may be disengaged from the pen.
It is evident with the construction just described the disengaged pens will fall into the casing 5 and in order that they may be contained within the casing and removed therefrom whenever desired, the lower end of the casing is provided with a bottom 22. This member is connected at one side to one portion of the inwardly extending flange 6 at the lower edge of the side wall of the casing and is pivotally secured thereto by means of hinges 23. The bottom is of a size to nicely fit within the opening surrounded by the flange 6 and is arranged to open outwardly. Pivoted within the casing is the intermediate portion of a keeper 23, one end of which extends between the edge of the bottom and inner face of the side wall of the casing and terminates in a lateral extension 24- which bears on the outer face of the side of the bottom 22. Extending through a lateral opening formed in the side wall 7 is a push button 2%, the inner end of the shank of which is pivoted to the upper end of the keeper and the outer end of which is spaced from the outer face of the side wall. With this construction it is obvious when the keeper is pressed inwardly its lower or engaging end will be moved from engagement with the bottom 22, whereby the latter may i l i I l 1 be opened outwardly and the contents of the casing removed.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a device which is comparatively simple in structure and inexpensive to manufacture, embodying few parts and these so arranged that the danger of derangement will be reduced to a minimum.
lVhat is claimed as new, is
1. A combined paper weight and pen extractor comprising a metallic casing provided at one end with an upwardly inclined top, said top being provided adjacent its outer edge with an opening communicating with the interior of the casing, a ledge on the inner face of the casing and having a serrated surface in a plane with one side of the opening of the top, a lever having one end pivoted within the casing and its opposite end extending to a point adjacent the opening of the top and overhanging said ledge and a push rod extending through the central portion of the top and having its lower end secured to the lever.
2. A combined paper weight and pen extractor comprising a casing provided on its lower end with a pivoted bottom, and at its upper end with an upwardly and inwardly inclined top, the said top having an opening adjacent the outer edge thereof, a ledge disposed in said casing having a serrated surface in a plane with the lower side of the opening of the top, a lever having one end pivoted within the casing and its opposite end extending to a point adjacent the opening of the top and yielding-1y held above said ledge, and a push rod extending through the said top and having its lower end secured to said lever.
