SPRINKLER-TOP FOR CONTAINERSQ LiNUX-3118.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, 19115.
Application filed October 2S, 1914.l Serial No. 869,096.
To all whom t may concer/lb.' l
Beit known that l, WILLIAM C. NENf s'rIEHL, a citizen of the United States, and
a res'dent of Wilmington, county of New Castle, State of Delaware, have invented certain Improvements in Sprinkler-Tops for Containers, of which the following is a y specification.
panying drawing, in which :-i
My invention relates toV certain improvements in sprinkler tops for containers used in rsifting powder and granular material., such as salt, Washing powders, tooth powders, etc.
One object of my invention is to provide means for keeping the container normally closed, yet allowing for the manipulation of the valve while the container is held in the hand.'` The moment the. valve is released it moves back tothe closed position.
A further'object of the invention is to rmake the spring member and the valve in one piece. 4
These objects l attain in the following manner, reference being had to Figure 1' 1s a perspective. view of the upper portion of the container, illustrating my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view; Fig. 3 is a plan view vwith the valve removed; Fig. 4 is a plan view with the valve detached; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modification.
Referring to the drawings, l' is the con-1A tainer having a perforated top 2, in the present instance made integral with the container, but it will be understood that it may be made separate and secured thereto in any suitable manner. 'In the top is a seriesl of perforations 3 and' one side j is depressed to form a recess 4.`
5 is the valve having a depending tongue 6 forming thespring member which is bent,
as shown, and rests within the recess 4; the lower end of the tongue bearing against the inner wall of the recess. lin the valveare perforations? which, 'when the-valve is moved to the open position, aline with .they` perforations Sin the vtop 2, allowir'ig material to be shaken from rthe oontainer.
ln order to 'hold kthejvalve on the'top, ll
punch projections 8 .from the top andvslot the valve 5 at 9 for the' reception ofthes'e the accoml these projections are turned down v`onto the valve so as to hold it against the top, thus while the valve can slide laterally it'cannot move vertically olf the top.
In Fig. 5, I have shown a screw top which Y can be applied to any container and the valve is located on this top in the same Inanner as that shown in Fig. l, but in this case the depression 4 is omitted and the tongue projects beyond the top and rests against the side thereof.
rlhe operation is as follows :-Th'e container is grasped by the hand with the thumb in contact with the tongue and, by pressing against the tongue'with the thumb, the valve is moved laterally until the perforations aline so that, when the sprinkler is inverted, the material can be shaken from the container, but as soon as the thumb is.
released the lspring tongue will return the valve to its normal position, as in Fig. 2, cutting off the iiow of material and closing the receptacle.
l claim 1. The combination with a container having a perforated top, of a perforated valve mounted to slide on top of the container and having a narrow depending spring tongue at .onevside, saidtongue having its lower end projecting inwardly and bearing on. the side of the container and tending to h/old the valve normally in the closed posi- -tion andserving, .when pressed, to'move the valve Lto the open position.
2.'.'l`he combination with a container hav'- ying a` perforated top and having a depression or recess in its wall 4at one side ofthe top, of a perforated valve mounted to slide at the top of the same and having a depending spring tongue disposed within said v recess, said `tongue having its lower 'end bearingagainst the container and retaining l'the valve normally in the 'closed position and serving-when pressed, to move the valve toV the, open position. i
n-testimonywhereof, I have signed my namel to this ,specicatiom in the presence of twosubscribing witnesses.
