Description

(No Model.)
J. W. IVORY. DREDGE BOX.
WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES IV. IVORY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DREDGE-BOX-.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 401,651, dated April 16, 1889. Application filed January 11, 1888. Serial No. 260,390. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES WV. IVORY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, United States of America, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dredge-Boxes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in a dredge-box of the order of a salt-cellar, pepper-box, flour-dredge, sugar-Sifter, 850.; and it consists in providing such box with a body having side perforations, an interior spring, 1 5 and a lid, as hereinafter set forth.
Figure lrepresents an end view of a dredge- -box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 4 represents a side view of a dredge-box in which the lid has a bayonet-joint connection with the box, being a modification in this respect of the invention as shown in Fig. 2,the spring in the interior of the box being par- 2 5 tially shown in dotted lines.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a dredgabox, which is provided with a lid, 1, 50 and having perforations or openings 2 in ,its side. The upper wall of the lid is cut away, as at 3, and beneath the same is a washer, 4, which is substantially of the diameter of said box A and rests against a coiled spring, 5, which latter is located within the box, it being noticed that disk 4: closes the opening 3 of the lid 1.
The operation is as follows: The box is grasped, the fingers resting against the washer 4 and the bottom of the box. The washer is now forced in, whereby the spring is compressed, and its coils ride over the openings 2 and work through the salt or material in the box, whereby said material is agitated and I worked through the openings 2, it being prevented from packing in the box or clogging in the openings. WVhen the washer is released of pressure, it returns to its normal position, owing to the expansion of the spring, and it is evident that the spring may be operated several times, as desired, by proper action of the finger on the washer.
If desired, the washer may be dispensed with and the lid or cap made movable, so as to compress the spring, for which purpose it may be connected with the box by a bayonetjoint, as shown in Fig. 4.
llavin g thus d cscribed my invention, whatl claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A dredge-box having an opening in its lid and perforations in its side, an inside coilspring, and a washer closing said opening in the lid, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. A dredge-box having a body with side perforations, a lid with an opening, a movable washer covering said opening, and a coiled bined substantially as described.
3. A dredge-box having side perforations, a lid, and an interior coilwhich is operated from said lid, said parts being combined substantially as described.
