To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SALVATORE LEO S1s'rI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Storage and Dispensing Vessels and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to fluid containing and dispensing vessels, and has for its object to provide such a vessel having a storage chamber and an auxiliary or dispensing chamber to which the fluid may be supplied as desired from the storage chamber by means of a plunger, a valve being provided for closing communication between the two chambers for retaining the fluid in the dispensing chamber and which is opened in operating the plunger for feeding the fluid from the storage to the dispensing chamber, the parts being further formed so that the fluid may be returned from the dispensing to the storage chamber when so desired' pose to atmospheric influences only a relatively small amount of the fluid at any one time, thus avoiding waste from evaporation or otherwise and minimizing the danger from esca in va ors' the unused 'asolene or fluid in the dispensing chamber by means of a controllable valve being returned to the storage chamber for futureuse and therein hereinafter.particularly described and then sought to be clearly defined by the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure '1 is a side elevation of a vessel embodying the features of the invention;

In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the storage chamber and 2 the auxiliary or dispensing chamber which may be screw threaded or otherwise connected to the storage chamber a-nd constituting a cover therefor. The auxiliary chamber is preferably formed with a funnel-shaped bottom 3 and provided with a tube 1 for filling the storage chamber, the tube having a cap or closure 5. Through the bottom of the auxiliary chamber extends a plunger rod 6, which in the preferred form is tubular, and is encircled by a sleeve 7 which extends from the bottom 3 and against the lower face of which may be seated, either directly or through the medium of a gasket 8, a head 9 formed at the lower end of the plunger rod and which may perform the function of valve. To the lower end of the plunger rod is attached a plunger 10 which preferably is made conical and the peripheral edge of which fits relatively close to the wall of the storage chamber as shown in Fig. 1 or t'othe wall of a chamber or cup 11 of smaller diameter set within the storage chamber as shown in Fig. 4. A spring is provided for holding the plunger in a raised position, which may be a coiled spring 12 bearing at one end against the underside ofthe plunger and at the other end against the bottom ofthe storage chamber as show-n in Fig. 1 or the bottom of the smaller chamber or cup 11 as shown in Fig. 1, or it may be attached to a plate 13 resting on the bottomof'the chamber or cup as illustrated.
Through the centralfbore-l l of the plunger rod passes a stem 15 having a valve head 16 at its lower end adapted to seat against and close the lower end of the bore 14: and having attached to its upper end by screw threads or otherwise a cup or dish shaped head 17. This dish shaped head has a hub 18 which moves with the valve stem 15 and is slidable longitudinally of the plunger rod. The upper portion of the are made through the upper portion of the plunger rod, leading from the chamber 19 into the auxiliary or dispensing chamber, and drain ducts 22 are formed in the outer face of the plunger rod so as to form passage ways leading from the auxiliary or dispensing chamber to the storage chamber and controlled in their communication with the storage chamber by the valve head at the lower end of the plunger rod.
Means are provided for admitting fluid from above to below the plunger of the storage chamber on the upstroke of the plunger and to provide against the fluid beneath the plunger from passing or surg ing from beneath to above the plunger on the down stroke of the plunger. This may. be effected by providing hinged." or flap valves 23 attached to the under face of the plunger across openings 24 in the plunger as shown in Fig. 2, or by hinged or flap valves 25 attached to the inside wall of the cup or chamber 11 across openings 26 formed in the side Wall as shown in Fig. 4. In either case the flap valves will close on the down stroke of the plunger so that the fluid beneath he plunger will be prevented from passing from beneaththe plunger except so much thereof as may be forced up through the central bore 1% of the plunger rod and into the auxiliary chamber 2, while on the upstroke of the plunger the flap valves will open and permit the fluid to flow. beneath the plunger so as to replenish the supply to be forced into the auxiliary chamber on the down stroke of the plunger.- Any other form of valve serving the purpose, however, might be used.
It is preferred to form openings 27 in the dip saucer or dish shaped plate 17 at the upper end of the plunger rod so that when the plunger rod is depressed to dip or bring the saucer or dish to the level of the fluid in the auxiliary chamber the fluid will pass into the cup through the openings 27 and saturate or moisten-the cloth that may be used for applying the fluid to the article to be cleansed, and when the cloth is removed the excess of fluid in the saucer will run back into the auxiliary chamber. .This saucer also forms a support for the applying cloth when not in use.
In operation, assuming that fluid is in the storage chamber and none in the auxiliary or dispensing chamber, on pressing down the cup 17 and the valve stem 15, and the plunger rod 6 after its upper end contacts with the bottom of cup 17, the Valve 16 becomes unseated and the plunger 10 de pressed so that the fluid beneath the plunger will be forced by compression upward through the central bore 14 of the rod and out through the ports 21 into the auxiliary or dispensing chamber and be retained therein by reason of the plunger head closing the lower ends of the restricted drain ducts 22 on the upward stroke of the plunger rod, and at the time the plunger rod 6 is depressed the upper ends of the drain ducts 22 are brought below the upper edge of the opening in the funnel-shaped bottom so as to prevent the upward escape of air and iuid through the ducts; repeated reciproca tion of the plunger supplying the desired quantity of the fluid to the auxiliary chamber and an additional supply of the fluid in the storage chamber being furnished to the space beneath the plunger on each upward stroke of the plunger. The desired quantity having been furnished tothe auxiliary, chamber, he applying cloth, sponge or brush may be placed over the saucer and the latter depressed to bring it to the level of the fluid which will pass up through the openings 27 and moisten the cloth, sponge or brush and when the pressure and the cloth, sponge or brush are removed the excess of fluid will flow back into the auxiliary chamber. When it is desired to empty the auxiliary chamber the plunger rod'will be depressed sufficiently to remove its lower head 9 from closing or sealing position when the fluid in the auxiliary chamber will drain froi'n that chamber through the drain ducts 22 into the storage chamber wherein it stands practically housed or protected from atmospheric or other influences. As soon as pressure is released from the saucer the spring 20 will bring the valve stem 15 and saucer to their normal position.
Under the construction described a safe storage vessel is afforded for the fluid; the fluid is supplied to the dispensing chamber only as required, and is returned to the storage chamber when the occasion for use does not exist; and provision is made for safety and avo dance of waste.
I have illustrated and described with particularity the preferred construction and arrangement of the several parts of the device but changes can be made therein without departing from the main or essential features of the invention.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim is:
1. A storage and dispensing vessel comprising two chambers communicable one with the other, a plunger in one of said f'chambers, a valve associated with said plunger and operable to open communication between the chambers in operation of the plunger to transfer fluid from one chamber to the other, and means for draining a liquid from one chamber into the other.

A storage and dispensing vessel comprising two chambers communicable one with the other, a plunger in one of said chambers, a rod connected with said plunger and extending into the other chamber, and a valve associated with said plunger and a valve associated with said rod and opercble in the reciprocation of the rod to permit the plunger to transfer fluid from the storage to the dispensing chamber.
4. A storage and dispensing vessel comprising a storage chamber and a dispensing chamber communicable one with the other, a plunger in one of said chambers, a rod connected with said plunger and extending into the dispensing chamber, a Valve associated with the plunger rod and operable in the reciprocation of the plunger to control communication between the two chambers, and a de ressible dip saucer in the dispensing cham er.
5. A storage and dispensing vessel comprising a storage chamber and a dispensing chamber communicable one with the other, a plunger in one of said chambers, a rod connected with said plunger and extending into the dispensing chamber, a valve associated with the plunger rod and operable in the reciprocation of the plunger to control communication between the two chambers, and an apertured depressible dip saucer in the dispensing chamber.
6. A storage and dispensing vessel comprising a storage chamber and a dispensing chamber communicable one with the other,
a plunger in one of said chambers, a rod connected with said plunger and extending into the dispensingohamber, a valve associated with the plunger rod and operable in the reciprocation of the plunger to control communication between the two chambers and valves controlling the flow of fluid from the storage chamber tothe space beneath the plunger in the reciprocation of the plunger.
7. A storage and dispensing vessel comprising a storage chamber and a dispensing chamber communicable one with the other, a plunger in one of said chambers, a tubular rod connected with said plunger and extending into the dispensing chamber, said rod having ports opening into the dispensing chamber, and a valve having a stem slidable in the plunger rod and operable to open communication between the two chambers on the down stroke of the plunger and to close communication on the upstroke of the plunger.
8. A storage and dispensing vessel comprising a storage chamber and a dispensing chamber communicable one with the other, a plunger in one of said chambers, a tubular rod connected with the plunger and extending into the dispensing chamber and controlling drain ducts for emptying the dispensing chamber, and a valve associated with the plunger rod and operable to control communication through the rod with the two chambers upon reciprocation of the plunger for supplying fluid from the storage to the dispensing chamber.
