SANITARY SIIAVING-CUP.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed May 17, 1910. Serial No. 561,893.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. J. Dow- Nnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at IVilmingtOn, in the county of Newcastle and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Shaving-Cups; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specilication.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in shaving cups and it has for its object the provision of a cupl especially designed for use in connection with liquid shaving soap, the construction being such as to protect the liquid soap which is contained within a hermetically sealed chamberv from outer air or from impurities of any kind, provision being had for supplying soap to the lather chamber and at such times and in such quantities as may be desired.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the novel construction and in the peculiar arrangement, combination and adaptation of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specically defined in the appended claim. l
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this speciiication and in which drawings Figure l is a central vertical section through a shaving cup constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the cup. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the upper end of the piston chamber showing the overflow slot-s, and Fig. l is a transverse section through the lower end of the piston chamber.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A represents the body of the cup which may be of metal or any other material adapted to the purpose and is provided with a suitable handle O attached preferably to the outer face of a portion A which extends laterally from' one side of the body portion of the cup.
The cover C is hinged to the laterally project-ing portion A of the 'cup and has a lather containing receptacle C fixed thereto, said cover carrying a cylinder K, having a lclosed top F through which the stem E of a piston L is adapted to have a reciprocating .movement A spring L is interposed between said piston and the lower portion of the cylinder which has a slot or opening P over which a valve N is positioned. Said spring has a tendency to normally hold the stem at its farthest outer throw. An opening I is formed near the upper end of the cylinder and provided for vent-ing the cylinder. A pipe G leads from the lower portion of the cylinder upward and empties 'into the lather containing receptacle C. A latch B is fixed to the marginal edge of the cover and adapted to engage a keeper B upon the wall of the cup A. l
In operation, when the parts are in closed or locked relation, the keeper will hold the cover in the position shown in solid lines in Fig. l. The liquid soap being contained within the chamber A2, when it is desired to feed a supply of the liquid soap into the shaving receptacle, the operator by pushing down upon the piston may cause a partial vacuum to be formed underneath the same as pressure is relieved from the piston, thus drawing in a supply of liquid soap into the cylinder. The next downward thrust of the piston will cause the liquid soap to be forced through the pipe G into the lather receptacle.
From the foregoing description, the operation of the device will be readily understood. The cover having been raised, liquid soap is placed within the chamber A2. The cover is then closed and the pump is operated to supply to the lather chamber such quantity of liquid soap as may be desired for use and any surplus of the liquid soap which may be drawn up by the action of the pump within the cylinder passes through the overflow openings il and will at once return down the outer face of the cylinder into the soap chamber. It will be noted that, when the cover is closed and locked, as the outer edge of the cover is provided with suitable packing material of a character such as will prevent the ingress of air or any foreign substance, the liquid soap contained within the outer chamber will be 'prevented from contamination and will also be protected against evaporation.
It will also be noted that the construction of the cup is such as to admit of its being readily cleaned, the interior ot' all portions of the cup proper being conveniently accessible when the cover is open.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
A shaving` Cup, a hinged cover therefor provided with an opening, a lather receptaole fastened to said cover and adapted to close within the cup, a cylinder supported in the opening` in the Cover and adapted to swing' therewith, the bottom of Said Cylinder having n valved opening, un npertured top for closing Said Cylinder, a springpressed piston movable within the cylinder and having a stem extendingthrough said Lipertnred top, and a pipe communicating between the portion of the Cylinder' below the piston and said receptacle.
