JAMES FRANCIS VOOD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOLDER FOR BLACKING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 360,335, dated March 29, 1887.
Application tiled January 10, 1887. Serial No. 223,841. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be :it known that l, Jiutns FEANeIs Woon, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful' Improvements in Holders for Ilacking, Ste., of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure I is a side elevation in the closed position. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section, the lid of the box or holder' being thrown back. Fig. 3 is a plan of Fig. I.
The object of this invention is to provide a holder for blacking or other material, or for holding boxes containing the blacking, &c., which may be readily opened and closed and retained in the respective positions; and it consists in the combination, withaboX ot' suitable shape, with a lid fitting thereon, of a handle attached to said box, a thumb-lever attached to the lid ot' the box and pivoted to the said handle, together with a spring arranged to bear against the cam-lever, whereby the lid is retained in the closed and open positions, respectively.
The improvement is clearly shown in the annexed drawings, in which A marks the box, and B its lid. To the box is secured, by soldering or otherwise, the forward extension, c',
`of a handle, C, which latter is provided with lugs D, adjacent to the side ot' the box A. To
said lugs is pivoted, at fr, a cam-lever, E, to the forward arm, e, of which is secured the lid B, whilst its bent rear or short arm has an upward projection,e,that constitutes a thumbpiece for operating the lever. The upper portion of the box is beveled inwardly1 and the rim ofthe lid is correspondingly beveled outwardly, as shown, so as to insure a close and easy lit ofthe one with the other, the lever to which the lid is secured being, of course, so pivoted tothe handle that the lid will close properly upon the box.
It will be seen that when the handle is grasped and the thumb pressed down upon the projection et of the lever the lid will be raised-that is, brought from the position seen in Fig. I to that of Fig. 2. In order, however, to retain the lid in these respective positions,
obvious that it (the lid) will be held in the open position, it being understood that the construction is such as shown, whereby the cam portion of the short arm of the lever is permitted to be brought past the pivotal center, although I may remark that it is not necessary that it should pass the center, as the friction will usually be sufficient to prevent the lid from being forced down by the spring, although the center has not been passed.
I do not limit myself to the precise form or construction shown either of the box or lever and spring devices; but
\Vhat I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is`
I. In a holder Afor blacking, &c., the combination of the handle secured to the bottom of the box and provided with the vertical lugs D adjacent to said box, the cam-lever secured tothe lid and pivoted to said lugs, together with the ilat spring secured to said handle and adapted t-o bear against the under side ot' said cam-lever, so as to retain the attached lid in the closed and open positions, respectively, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a holder Vfor blacking, 85o., the combination of the box, the handle secured to the bottom thereof and provided with thelugs D, the lid, the camlever pivoted to said lugs and having its forward arm secured to said lid and its rear arm bent upward to forni a thumbpiece, andthe flat spring attached to said handle and adapted to bear against the under side of said cam-lever, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony WhereofI have hereunto affixed my signature this 9th day of December, A. D. 1886.
JAMES FRANCIS \VOOD.

I. C. MENGE, E. FABLE, Jr.
