CHALK-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
lli iatented June 8, 1915.
Application filed April 14, 1914. Serial No. 831,872. I
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, IRVIN L. PRITCHARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chalk-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in chalk holders, and has for its object to provide a cheap, simple and efiicient device for holding tailors chalk in such a manner as to prevent breaking thereof, and also to permit of practically all of the piece in the holder being used, whereby a saving of the chalk will be effected. V
The invention consists of the novel construction and arrangement of the parts and combination of parts hereinafter more fully set forth in the following specification and pointed out in detail in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank before being bent into shape to form the holder. Fig. 2 is an edge view of Fig. 1. c Fig. 3 is a section of Fig. 4, taken on the line 0cm thereof. Fig. 4 is a plan view of my improved holder with a piece of chalk projecting from the opposite sides thereof.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which like reference numerals designate like parts throughout the several views thereof, 1 designates the bottom and 2 the top of the holder, both being formed of a single piece of metal, preferably of spring metal. The bottom 1 is provided with two slots 3 and the metal between said two slots is turned to form a lip 4 over which the catch'5 takes to lock the holder in the closed position. The metal on either sides of the slots 3 is bent up on a line with the inner end of said slots to form the upturned edge 6. The opposite 7 end of the bottom 1 is provided with two slots 7 and the metal on either side thereof is turned up to form the edge 8. The metal of both the upturned edges 6 and 8 is cut on an incline so that when turned up to form the holder the said edges will incline downwardly on a line with the downwardly bent top 2. The said top 2 is bent where it joins the bottom 1 and is adapted to fit down between the edges 6 and 8 when locked, and is held in the locked position by the catch 5 which springs over the lip 4. The top 2 inclinesdownwardly on opposite sides thereof from a point where it joins the up- 7 wardly extending edge 8, so that said downwardly-bent edges come down upon the chalk 9 when the holderis locked. The top 2 is also provided with a number of projections 10 out from the metal forming the top and bent down so that their lower ends impinge against the chalk to hold the latter from being forced back into the holder when being used. A portion of the projections 10 projecttoward one edge and the rest toward the other edge, in order that two pieces of chalk, one projecting from each side and of different colors, may be held in the holder at one time.
1 Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A chalk holder having a top and a bottom connected at one end, the said top inclining downwardly on opposite sides from where the top joins the upwardly extending edge of the bottom and provided with a number of projections cut from the top and extending downwardly on an incline into the holder.
2. A chalk holder having a top and a bottom formed of a single piece of metal joined from said fiat portion on a line with said inclined edges at the opposite ends of the bottom, said top being provided with proj ections cut therefrom and extending into the holder on an incline.
Intestimony whereof I aflix my signature i in presence of two witnesses.
IRVIN L. PRITCHARD.
Witnesses:
