TOM BOVILLE, OF SWAINBY, ENGLAND.
LABEL CLlP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 638,171, dated November 28, 1899. Application filed June 5, 1899. Serial No. 719,451. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ToM BOVILLE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Swainby, in the county of York, England, have invented a new and useful Label-Clip, (for which I have obtained provisional protection in Great Britain, No. 24,499, dated the 21st day of November, 1898,) of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved clip for detachable labels, especially suitable for luggage-labels or the loose labels usually attached to packages and for goods in transit. Its special purpose is to provide a more convenient and effective clip than those hitherto used, particularly in the case in which the article to which the clip is attached is very frequently traveling from one place to another and requires a new label at every fresh consignment. The advantage in such a case of a thoroughly reliable permanent clip by means of which the label can be almost instantaneously replaced is obvious.
My improved clip consists, essentially, of two plates, of which the one hereinafter called the back plate is provided with a split ring or cord or any other convenient means of attachment to the object to be labeled, and has secured upon it a pin serving as the hingepivot for the front plate, to which plate is attached a knob or handle for convenience of opening. The back plate is so united to the hinge-bolt that it acts as a spring the pressure of which controls the movement of the front plate and prevents it from becoming loose. The back plate, moreover, has a projecting point attached to it, which is preferably arranged to pass into a cavity in the handle or knob attached to the front plate when the apparatus is closed. This pin passes through the label, when the same is gripped by the closing of the apparatus and forms an additional security for the firm holding of the said label.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which I have represented one modification of my invention by way of example, Figure 1 shows a front elevation of the device in the closed position; Fig. 2, a side view thereof in the same position; Fig. 3, a section of the device in the open position.
The back plate A, provided with a hole a for a split ring or cord or other means of attachment, is constructed as shown in the drawings, having its two side pieces B and 0 turned over and bent slightly forward in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 2, thus affording spring-bearings for the pivot D of the hinged front plate E of the device. The part F of the front plate E, which passes around the said pivot D, is formed rectangular, as shown, in order to cause the front plate to remain firmly in either the closed or the open position until sufficient pressure is exerted to move it from one to the other. The knob or handle G, attached to the front plate, is hollow, and the pin or tooth H, secured to the back plate, is so placed as to enter the cavity in the said knob G when the apparatus is closed.
J, Figs. 1 and 2, represents a label held by the device.
The operation of my apparatus is obvious from the foregoing. The cliphaving been opened remains in the position indicated in section in Fig. 3. A label J is then placed upon the pin H and the front plate is forced down upon it, causing the pin H to penetrate the label and to enter the cavity of the knob G, while the label is further firmly gripped between the back plate and the front plate under the influence of the springs B and 0. By raising the front plate when requisite the label can be removed at any time and replaced.
The device is preferably constructed of hard metal, such as steel, but may be made wholly or partly of other materials, such as aluminium, vulcanite, celluloid, or other suitable material.
What I claim is- A detachable luggage-label clip comprising a back plate A having a perforated central prolongation and a split ring, two side springs B O, a pivot D clasped by the said springs B O, a front plate E, a prolongation F on said front .plate folded over the said pivot D to form a rectangular sleeve, and a spike H on the said back plate adapted to pass through a hole in the said front plate.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
TOM BOVILLE.
