Be it known that I, GEORGE H. TAYLOR, a citizen of the; United States,residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Marking- T-ags, of which the following is a specificat1on. I

This invention relates to a marking tag and particularly to a construction adapted for application to a strand or body of material-by embracing the same and being clamped or locked thereon. 1

The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction comprising a bendable plate adapted to be folded upon itself and provided with an inwardly extending recess disposed adjacent a median line between the edges of said plate, and clamping means carried by the plate adjacent said fold line to force material embraced by the plate toward said line during the bending action of the plate, whereby material may be wrapped about the central body of the plate and clamped by the means at opposite sides of said body.

Other and further objects'and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features'thereof defined by the appended claims.

In the drawing like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views thereof.

The present invention is primarily an improvement upon my prior Patent No. 924,946 dated June 15, 1909, and seek to provide a convenient body upon which the material to which the tag is to be applied may be wrapped to prevent movement of the tag thereon.

The numeral 10 designates the body of the tag which may be of any desired size or configuration and is formed of bendable material, preferably sheet metal adapted to retain its position when bent upon itself. This plate or body 10 is provided with slots or recesses 11 extending inwardly from ts side edges 12 leaving a central wrapping portion 13 adapted to be bent on a median line lengthwise of the plate. One portion of the plate is formed withv clamping means or tongues 15 extending toward and disposed adjacent said median fold line 18 to force material embraced by said plate toward said line during the bending action.

The plate when folded may be secured in such position by the locking lip 16 projecting from the end 17 thereof to engage the opposite end 14 when bent thereon. This latter portion may be formed with an aperture 19 if desired for supporting the tags or suspending any; object therefrom. The tag may also bear any desired indicating or identifying character, such for instance as terial to be marked may be conveniently wrapped thereon, as shown in Fig. 4. The portions of the plate are then folded together in a direction opposite to the first folding upon the median line 18 (Fig. 2) until they meet and during this action the clamping tongues at the sides of the wrapping portion engage the material embraced by the plate and force it toward said median line, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, thus eflectually preventing any movement of the tag upon the material. In order to prevent the accidental opening of the bent plate the locking lip is bent over the free end, as shown in Fig. 5.

The tag is very simple in construction and adapted to be stamped from plate material so as to be economically produced. It is easily and conveniently applied by hand without the use of any tools, and when in position is positively held upon the material.

While the invention is particularly adapted for use as an identifying tag to be applied to the hair of live stock, it is equally applicable to a strand or body of any other material or article of manufacture.

The invention is not confined to the particular form of recesses and clamping tongues shown as changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What I claim is:

1. A tag comprising a bendable plate adapted to be folded upon itself and provided with an inwardly extending recess disposed adjacent a median line between the edges of said plate to produce a continuous portion disposed inward from one side edge thereof about which material is adapted to be wrapped, and clamping means carried by the plate adjacent said line to force material embraced by said plate toward said line during the bending action of the plate.

2. A tag comprising a bendable plate adapted to be folded upon itself and provided with an inwardly extending recess disposed adjacent a median line between the edges of the plate to produce a continuous portion disposed inward from one side edge thereof about which material is adapted to be wrapped, and a clamping projection or tongue carried by the plate adjacent and at one side of said recess to force material embraced by the plate toward said line during the bending action of the plate.

3. A tag comprising a bendable plate adapted to be folded upon itself and provided with opposite inwardly extending recesses from the edges of the plate to form a wrapping portion, and clamping projections defined by said recesses disposed at opposite sides of said portion and extending toward the fold line of the plate to force material embraced by the plate toward said line during the bending action.

4. A tag comprising a bendable plate adapted to be folded upon itself and provided with opposite inwardly extending recesses from the edges of the plate to form a wrapping portion, clamping projections defined by said recesses disposed at opposite sides of said portion and extending toward the fold line of the plate to force material embraced by the plate'toward said line during the bending action, and a locking lip carried by one end of the plate and adapted to embrace the opposite end thereof.

5. A tag comprising a bendable plate .adapted to be folded upon itself and formed at opposite sides with L-shaped recesses extending inward from the edges thereof to produce a continuous central portion about which material is adapted to be wrapped and parallel clamping tongues defined by said recesses at each side of said portion.

6. A tag comprising a bendable plate adapted to be folded upon itself and formed at opposite sides with L-shaped recesses extending inward from the edges thereof to produce a continuous central portion about which material is adapted to be wrapped and parallel clamping tongues defined by said recesses at each side of said portion, and a locking lip projecting from one end of said plate to embrace the opposite end thereof.

7. A tag comprising .a bendable plate adapted to be folded upon itself and formed at opposite sides with inwardly extending recesses to produce a central portion disposed adjacent the fold line of said plate and about which material is adapted to be wrapped.
