- My invention relates to clasps for fastening together stays or corsets, although it may be used for other purposes. It is an improvement on the clasp invented by me for which I obtained United States Letters Patent No. 682,354, dated September 10, 1901. In that clasp the fastening device consisted of three parts. In practice I have found certain objections to the construction disclosed in said patent. In making the clasp of the three plates or parts as shown in Figures 4, 5, and 6 of the drawings of the patent difficulty arose in the putting together of these parts, especially as the under plate could not be readily secured in place and it did not perform the full function that is required. Another objection was that the clamp became detached.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,834, dated September 1, 1903. Application filed June 19,1903. Serial No. 162,157. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH GOLDBERG, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps, of which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to clasps for fastening together stays or corsets, although it may be used for other purposes. It is an improvement on the clasp invented by me for which I obtained United States Letters Patent No. 682,354, dated September 10, 1901. In that clasp the fastening device consisted of three parts. In practice I have found certain objections to the construction disclosed in said patent. In making the clasp of the three plates or parts as shown in Figures 4, 5, and 6 of the drawings of the patent difficulty arose in the putting together of these parts, especially as the under plate could not be readily secured in place and it did not perform the full function that is required. Another objection was that the clamp became detached.
The object of my present invention is to overcome these objections.
Further objects will appear from the hereinafter description.
Referring to the drawings which accompany this application and form apart thereof, and in which the same parts are referred to in the different views by the same referenceletters, Fig. 1 illustrates the upper part of two stays with my improved clasp attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 illustrates a blank which when folded forms the middle and inner plate of the clasp. Fig. 4 is'a view of the lockingclamp. Fig. 5 shows the blank partly folded and in position before the clamp is put in place. Fig. 6 shows the clamp in place in the recess ofthe upperportion of the blank formed for that purpose. Fig. 7 shows the blank folded together and the clasp in place pivoted between the two parts of this blank. Fig. 8 shows the operation or spring action of the clasp when the locking-clampis partly raised.

To the other stay issecured or recesses 0, into which is pivoted the clamp C by the projections or lugs 0 This clamp is provided with an opening 0 which fits over the head B of the stud B to prevent the accidental unlocking of the clamp, as in my former construction. This locking-clamp is also made of such length that its outer ends c extend beyond the outer ends of the plates O and C.
The parts are constructed and assembled as follows: The blank shown in Fig. 3 is cut out of a piece of metal with the openings E cut therein, the openings having an enlarged and contracted part, as shown, the enlarged part permitting the stud B to be inserted and the contracted part holding the stud in locked position. The part 0 forms a pivot for the clamp 0 It is also provided with the rivetholjes F, by which the two plates 0 and C are secured to the stay A. The blank is then partially folded, as shown in Fig. 5. The lugs c of the clamp C are inserted in the struck-up portion 0, as shown in Fig. 6, when the blank is closed to the position shown in Fig. 7, with the outer ends thereof on the same line and with theopenings E E mating and the clamp held in between the two. As thus constructed the two plates 0 and C have a spring action and tend to hold the clamp 0 closed or in locked position. When the clamp is raised, as shown in Fig. 8, the two plates 0 and 0 will separate, as shown in'said figure, and will have a tendency to throw the clamp down and hold it in locked position. The parts as they are assembled as shown in Figs. "land 8 are now riveted at the point D to the stay A.
The stays are fastened together by raising the clamp 0 so that the stud B may be inserted in the openings in the plates 0 0', when the clamp O is turned down over the head of the stud which passes through the opening 0 in the clamp, where the stud is securely locked from accidental opening. The outer end of the clamp projects beyond the ends of the plate, so that the clamp may be easily claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A clasp consisting of two plates formed of one piece of material bent or folded upon itself and provided with openings, which mate when the material is folded, adapted'to receive the head of a stud, one of the plates being provided with recesses, and a clamp pivoted in the recesses and between the two plates and adapted to move in contact with the head of the stud, when the stud is inserted in the plates, to prevent the stud from being moved out of the openings in the plates.
2. In a clasp, the combination of two stays, a stud attached to one of the stays, three plates secured to the other stay, two of the plates being of the same construction and having recesses and openings which mate when the plates are assembled, the said opening being provided to receive the stud, thethird upper and pivoted plate having means by which it is pivoted in said recesses, the two plates being made and assembled so as to bear against the pivoted plate to keep it closed against the stud and to prevent the accidentaldisplacement or unlocking of the stud,
3. In a clasp, the combination of two stays,
a stud attached to one stay, a plate having an opening and a contracted slot and recesses, another plate also having an opening and a contracted slot which mate with the opening and contracted slot of the first-named plate, the two being riveted to the second stay, a third plate having an opening therein and two lugs or projections, the said projections pivoted in the recesses of the first-named plate and against which the second or under plate bears to hold said pivoted plate in locked position over the head of the stud to prevent accidental displacement of the stud.
4:. In a fastening device, the combination of the stay A A, the stud B attached to the stay A, said stud having a head B, the plates 0 0 having the openings and contracted slots E, said slots mating when the two plates are assembled, the plate 0 provided with the recess o, the two plates being riveted tothe stay A, the clamp G having the projections c pivoted in the depression a of the plate 0, the said clamp C having an opening a therein to pass over the head of the stud and bears against the stud and holds the stud from accidental displacement, the outer end of the clamp projecting beyond the ends of the plates Oand C, substantially as purpose described.
