UNITED STATES PATENT OEEicE.
JAMES F. XVALSH, OF ORLANDO, FLORIDA.
CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 589,880, dated September 14, 1897.
Application filed June 27, 1896. $crial'1lo. 697,157. (No model.)
To all (chant it III/(Ly concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES F. WALSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Orlando, in the county of Orange and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to clasps adapted for use in connection with suspenders to support the undergarment and the trousers.
My object is to provide a simple and cheap clasp of the class described which will be more perfectly adapted to perform its functions.
A further object is to provide a novel form of clasp which will be adapted to hold the under-garment connected to the trousers in a highly superior manner.
Having these objects in view my invention consists of a clasp of ihe class described comprising certain novel features and combinations, appearing more fully hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing my improved clasp open, and also showing the undergarment and the trousers each provided with an eyelet adapted'for use in connection with the clasp; and Fig. 2 a sectional view showing the clasp in use.
Myimproved clasp is composed of two members A and B, each of which is provided with an ofiset portion 1. Member 13 is provided with two ears 2 and 3, and member A also has two cars 4 and 5, which overlap the ears 2 and 8, and a pin 6, passing through all the ears, pivotally connects the two members together.
C designates a portion of the suspenders which is looped around the pin, as at 7.
The numeral 8 designates a bent spring which has its ends connected to members A and B and is adapted to hold them normally open.
D designates a somewhat rounded and elongated head which is provided with a longitudinally-extending slit 9 and has a short shank 10, which connects it to the bent or oifset portion 1 of member B.
E designates a socket which is provided with a cross-slit 11 and is of suitable interior dimensions so that it will properly receive the head D, and this socket is provided with inwardly-extending flanges 12 and 13, which after the head has been received within the socket spring against shank 10, so that the head is firmly held in position, It will be observed that by thus slitting the head and socket spring-arms are formed, so that both the head and socket will give when being connected or disconnected.
F designates a section of the undergarinent and G the trousers. IIeretofore the undergarment has been separately connected to the suspender, but in the present invention both the undergarment and trousers are connected to the same clasp, which is that heretofore described. Eyelets H and I are secured within the fabrics so as to be in alinement.
The suspender clasp is applied by first pressing the eyelets together and inserting the socket within them and then pressing the head within the socket, whereupon the clasp will be locked and the garments held together.
My invention is at once simple, cheap, and serviceable, as it obviates the necessity of employin g suspeuder-buttons and extra parts of the suspender unless desirable, as the clasp can be used to support both the trousers and the undergarment.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a Suspender-clasp, the combination with members provided with ears, of a pivot-pin passing through said cars, a spring for keeping the members normally opened, a socket connected to one of the members, and a head connected to the other member and adapted for reception in the socket and to be held therein.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES F. XVALSH.
