SUSPEND ER-END SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 617,085, dated January 3, 1899.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. EDeARToN, of Shirley, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspender- Ends, of which the followingis aspecification.

This invention has relation to suspenders for wearing-apparel, and has for its object to provide an improved end member adapted for connection with the buttons of the trousers and to be detachably connected with the end of the suspender-strap; and to this end the invention consists of the improved suspender-end possessing those features of construction and arrangement of parts illustrated on the drawings and now to be described in detail and then pointed out in the claims hereto annexed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawin gs,and to the letters and figures marked thereon, forming a part of this specification, the same letters and figures designating the same parts or features, as the case may be, wherever they occur.

Of the drawings, Figure 1 represents a front View of my improvedsuspenderend and aportion of the suspender-strap to which it is detachably secured. Fig. 2 represents a view of the Suspender-end detached with one end of the loop raised. Fig. 2 represents an en larged section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents the loop c,hereinafter referred to, spread out in a single thickness. Figs. 5 and 6 represent a modified construction of the loop 0. Fig. 7 represents a sectional view of aportion of the Suspender-end. Fig. 8 represents a section on line 8 8 of Fig. 7.

Of the drawings, a represents a suspenderstrap having an adjusting-clamp a and a wire or sheet-metal loop a having a crossbar placed in the fold of the strap a.

The suspender-end is pendent from the wire loop a and is composed of the strips or cords b and the flexible loop 0. The cord or strip is doubled to have the two

2 and 3, which are caught together by metallic bands I) to form buttonhole-tabs 19 one of the bands Z) serving to hold the ends of the cord together. These cords may be of any suitable material, although I prefer leather strips doubled over longitudinally and having the edges united by a line of stitches. The two

2 and 3 of the doubled cord or strip having the buttonholes at the ends, and thus forming one species of attaching devices, are separated at their-central portions, one of said separated portions passing through the main loop and the other through the supplemental loop hereinafter described.

The supporting-loop c for the strips or cords b is formed of leather or other equivalent material folded twice, so as to have two overlapping ends o 0 the end a being united to the body portion by the rivet d, here shown as the stud member of a fastening device, with which the metallic spring-socket d or the other member of the fastener may be engaged. The loop is slotted, as at c 0 to receive the ends of a supplemental loop e, which ends lie between the end 0 and the body portion of the loop a and are secured by the said rivet d. In the lower fold of the loop 0 the portion 2 of the strip or cord 1) is passed, while the other portion 3 passes through and is sustained by the fold of the supplemental loop. Thus it will be seen that the two portions of the cord or buttonholestrip 5 lie in the same plane, one inside of the other, and are sustained by the two loops, which are secured together by the stud member of the ball-and-socket fastening.

The free end of the loop 0, which is provided with the socket member d, is readily passed through the wire loop a and the cap is engaged with the stud cl, so as to hold the end in place. I therefore provide a very simple and easily-manufactured suspenderend which is readily attachable and detachable and which is sightly in appearance and of good wearing qualities.

Of course it will be understood that various changes may be made in the suspenderend without departing from the scope of my invention. In Figs. 5 and 6 the main loop and the supplemental loop are formed integrally, the piece forming the loop being cut at one end to form three tongues ff f. The tongue f constitutes an equivalent of the supplemental loop 6 and is secured by the stud member (1 of the fastener to the body of the main loop. The tongues f f are secured to the body of the piece 0 by eyelets g g or other fastening devices, such as stitches, and serve to support the portion 3 of the suspenderend.

The strip b, forming the portions 2 3 and the buttonhole-tabs, is preferably made of a narrow piece of leather doubled over longitudinally and having its edges united by stitches, as above described, thus forming a leather tube. To increase the strength and durability of said strip, I prefer to locate a strong cord 2', of linen, cotton, or other suitable material, within the said tube, the said cord being secured by the spurs b of the metal bands I), as shown in Fig. 8.

Having thus explained the nature of the invention and described a way of constructing and using the same, though Without attempting to set forth all of the forms in which it may be made or all of the modes of its use, I declare that what I claim is- 1. A Suspender-end comprising a flexible loop having a free end adapted to pass over a cross-bar on the suspender-strap and provided with one member of a fastening device, a supplemental flexible loop extending beyond the main loop, said free end overlapping the said supplemental loop, and another member of said fastening device passed through the main loop and through the supplemental loop to hold them together, said fastening device operating to secure the main loop detachably on the said cross-bar, and attaching devices having separated central portions passing one through the main loop and the other through the supplemental loop.

2. A suspender-end comprising a doubled buttonhole-strip, a flexible strip doubled upon itself to form a main loop to receive one portion of said buttonhole-strip, a supplemental flexible loop extending beyond the main loop, to receive the other portion of said buttonhole-strip, and having its end connected with the body of the strip, the free end of the strip which is adapted to pass over a cross-bar of a Suspender-strap, being provided with one member of a fastening device, and another member of said fastening device passed through the body of said flexible strip, whereby the fastening device maysecure the said loop detachably on the cross-bar.

3. A suspender-end comprising a flexible loop having a free end adapted to pass over a cross-bar on the suspender-strap, and provided with one member of a fastening device,- said loop being cut or slit to provide a sup plemental loop integral therewith, and ex tending beyond the said main loop, the free end of the supplemental loop being secured to the body of the main loop, and another member of said fastening device connected with thebody of the main loop and operating to secure said main loop detaohably on the cross-bar, and attaching devices having separated central portions passing one through the main loop. and the other through the supplemental loop.
