UNI
ELIZABETH J'. MAG-EE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HAT-PIN-roINT PROTECTOR.
To all 'LU/0m @'15 may conce/m Be it known that I, ELIZABETH J. MAGEE, a citizen of the United `States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat-Pin- Point Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hat pin point protectors, and has for its object the production of a device of this character which will be of improved construction and eflicient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
Vith these objects in view, my invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this speciiication, and in which- Figure l is a central longitudinal section of a hat pin point protector embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a section taken on line m a2 of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of one of the grasping jaw members of the device, detached.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawing, comprises a hollow body 1 which is open at vboth ends. The body l is formed of sheet metal and the same is formed enlarged at one end in order to add tothe ornate appearance of the device. Pivotally mounted at 2 in the opening provided at this end of said body are two cooperating jaw members 3. The inner ends of the jaw members 3 project into the body l for engaging against the opposite sides of a hat pin point inserted between the same in order to lock said body upon the hat pin. Leaf springs fic coperate with the jaw members 3 for normally forcing the latter into engaging or operative position, the engaging surfaces of said jaw members being provided with teeth, as shown, in order to increase the friction and so as to obviate the possibility of accidental displacement of the device from the pin point. The edge of the opening at the end of the body is reinforced by a wire member 5 around which said end is bent, as shown, the wire member 5 serving as the pivot pin for each of the j aw members 3, the latter being provided with kperforated ears 6 which are engaged by the member 5, as clearly shown in FigzQ. Arranged in the Specification of Letters-Patent.

opposite end of the body l is a cork member 7 which, however, forms no part of the present invention, is held in position by reason of the tapering form thereof, the adjacent end of the body being formed to coincide, and by reason of the inwardly projecting flange 8 which is provided at the extremity of said end, the tapering walls of the body preventing movement of said member 7 in one direction and the flange 8 preventing movement in the opposite direction. The member 7 serves to limit the inserting movement of a pin point when engaged by the jaw members 3, the cork, by reason of its pierceability and resiliency, preventing any injury to the point of the pin which is forced into contact therewith. Also, if desired, the cork member 7 may be utilized in fastening the protector upon the pin point, the latter being adapted to be inserted through the open end of the body l at the member 7 to pierce the latter, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l.
A protector of the construction set forth is durable and economical and the same may be readily and quickly attached to a hat pin point and as expeditiously detached when desired; When positioned upon the point of a pin, the device will serve to guard or protect the same so as to prevent injury, which might otherwise result with the pin point. exposed. Also, the device will serve to prevent detachment of the hat pin and the consequent loss thereof.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into eect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention.. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: A
l. In a device of the kind described comprising a metallic body portion having an open end; a ring turned in such metallic body portion around its open end; and two spring pressed cooperating pin clamping jaws pivoted on said ring, substantially as described.
2. A device ofthe kind described comprising a metallic body portion having an open end; a ring turned in suoli metallic In testimony whereof I have signed my body poi-tion around its open end; and two naine to this specification in the presence of spring pressed cooperating jaws pivoted on two subscribing Witnesses.
said ring and having tlieii` manually oper- Y ELIZABETH J. MAGEE.
ating ends extended from said body portion Vitnesses: and their pin engaging ends extended inside JOSHUA R. I-I. PoTTs, said body portion, substantially as described. JANET E. FARRELL.
