Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, F REDERIGK D. REP- PER and CHARLES L. JACOBS, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Jersey City, county of Hudson, State of New Jersey, and at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Stoppers and Brushes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to a combined stopper and brush and has for its object the production of an eflicient means whereby the protector band or collar is held upon the handle.

Another object of this device is the production of an eflicient means whereby the protector band and bristles are held upon the handle by a simple ferrule.

IVith these and other objects in view this device consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings :Figure l is a side elevation of the stopper and brush. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof with the protector band or collar in section. F ig. 3 is a vertical section thereof. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the modified form. Fig. is a perspective of an improved metallic ferrule. Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing the means whereby the protector collar is held upon the handle.

Referring to the drawings by numerals 1 designates a handle provided with a reduced portion 2 to facilitate the gripping thereof when the stopper is withdrawn from the mouth of the bottle. The handle 1 is provided at its lower end with a tapering reduced portion 3. This tapering reduced portion 3 is provided at its upper side with a circumferential groove 4. A metal ferrule 5 is provided at its upper side with a crimped portion or flange 6 which fits into the circumferential groove 4. The other edge of the ferrule is provided with an up turned rim 7, said upturned rim being at such an angle as to form a resilient means for holding the protector 8 upon the handle and against the shoulder 9. This protector collar 8 forms an efficient means for closing the mouth of the bottle into which the stopper is placed and also constitutes a means for holding the ferrule 5 against spreading and removal from the handle. The tapering form of the reduced portion 3 and of the ferrule 5 acts as a binding means upon the bristles 10, and in this manner tends to prevent said bristles from being pulled from their position in the handle 1. It will also be seen that by use of the upturned rim formed upon the ferrule 5, the protector collar S will be prevented from being torn from the handle, should the stopper be stuck in the neck of the bottle, for the reason that the rim 7 is resilient and yields outwardly as indicated in Fig. 6, and does not wear upon the lower end of the collar at one definite point.

In the modified form of this device, the ferrule 5 is made of wood or any other suitable material and is provided with a laterally extending rim 11 which fits squarely upon the bottom of the protector collar 8. This ferrule may be fastened upon the reduced portion 3 of the handle 1 by means of glue, cement, or like material.

It will be seen by referring to Fig. 5 that the metallic ferrule is composed of one piece, and by placing it in its correct position upon the device, all the members are held in a firm position upon each other. Owing to the wedge-like structure of the ferrule at the point which grips the bristles, it will be seen that it will not be necessary to emplo additional means to secure the bristles to the handle of the brush. It should, however, be understood that if it is so desired, the bristles may be secured to the brush or to the ferrule in any desired or well-known manner.

In the modification shown in Fig. 4., it will not be necessary to employ the flange 6 for holding the ferrule in engagement with the handle of the brush, as said ferrule may be held upon the reduced portion 3 of the handle 1 by means of glue or other suitable material.

Having described this invention what is claimed is 1. In a stopper and brushof the class de scribed, a handle provided with a reduced lower end, a shoulder formed on said handle, bristles held upon said handle, a conical ferrule secured on the handle and provided with a laterally extending rim upon its lower end, a protector collar or band positioned on the outer side of said ferrule and heldin position against the shoulder formed on the handle by means of the laterally extending rim.

2. In a stopper and brush of the class described, a handle provided with a reduced portion upon its lower side, said handle provided with a circumferential groove at the upper end of the reduced portion, a metallic ferrule mounted upon said handle and adapted to assist in holding the bristles upon said handle, the metallic ferrule being provided on its upper edge with an inwardly crimped portion or flange, said flange resting within said circumferential groove formed upon the handle, a protector band carried by said ferrule, the lower edge of said ferrule being provided with an upturned resilient rim, said rim engaging the lower end of said protector band and holding the same in a set position upon said ferrule.
