SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 305,171, dated September 16, 1884:.
Application filed March 8, 1884.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC H. GARSON, of
Rochester, Monroe county, New York. have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Boxes for Holding Cleansing-Powders and other Materials; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull,clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan of the box with the cover partially thrown open. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same in line as :v of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the water-cup.
My improvement relates to wooden boxes for holding cleansing-powders and other materials where it is desired to use water or other liquids to moisten the same or'to form a paste. Ordinary boxes now in use are very inconvenient, from the fact that the box is made simply for holding the powder, and no provision is made for holding the liquid, and the fingers are soiled in mixing the material.
My invent-ion consists of a block of wood provided with two distinct and separate cavities, one of which holds the material inthe bare wood, the other is metallic lined for con taining the liquid, and the whole covered by a sliding pivoted cover, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, A shows a rectangular block of wood, from which the box is formed. In the top of this box two cavities, a b, are formed by boring or otherwise. In the cavity a is placed the cleansing-powder, blacking, or any other material it is desired to use. In
the other cavity, 1), is placed a metallic cup,
c, preferably of tin, and having a flange or rim which seats it firmly in the cavity. This cup is for the purpose of holding water or other liquid for nioistening the powder.
B is the cover, consisting of a thin strip of wood, which, if desired, may be formed by cutting off the top of the block preparatory to forming the cavities above described. The block A has at one end a raised shoulder,

made inclined or angular from one end to the other on top, as shown in Fig. 1, and the inner edge of this shoulderis dovetailed or beveled back, as shown at Fig. 2, to form a seat for the cover. The corresponding end of the cover is formed with a similar incline, h, and has a beveled edge, It, to fit the seat. The other end of the cover is pivoted at m to the block. The cover is swung off and 011 horizontally, and, when turned on, its end strikes into the bevel of the block, which holds it firmly in place over the block and tightly over the two cavities therein.
In packing the box for the market the cavity a only is filled, the cleansing or other material being placed therein. The cavity b is left unfilled. This cavity is used only for placing liquid therein for mixing the powder in I use. Being made of tin or other metal, it will hold liquid, and it can be removed at any time for cleansing or other purposes.
Ordinary boxes have only a receptacle for containing the powder, and the liquid has to be supplied from someoutside source, no provision being made for holding it or having it near at hand. In such cases there is much trouble and inconvenience, and the fingers become soiled and dirty. All these difiiculties are obviated in this case.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, a box for containing cleansing-powder and other materials, consisting of a block of wood having two cavities formed therein, one of them being provided with a metallic lining, and a cover closing both cavities, as shown and de scribed, and for the purpose specified.
