JAMES VAN DYK, OF BROOKLYN, NEIV YORK.
BOX FOR ICE-CREAM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,443, dated January 22, 1889. Application filed November 5, 1883! Serial No. 289,985. \(NO model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES VAN DYK, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and 'useful Improvement in Boxes for Ice-Cream and other Articles, of which the following-is a full, clear, and exact description.
The especial object of the invention is to provide a box for containing bricks of icecream, and which will admit of the cream being dislodged from the box with neatness and dispatch.
To this end the invention consists in the novel construction of the box, as hereinafter particularly described, and defined in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal sectional elevation of a box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the box with the cover removed and the bottom partly broken away; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 00 00, Fig. 1.
In constructing a box in accordance with my invention I form the body a of the same with an open top, which is closed by a cover, I), of any approved construction, and with an open bottom. I also provide the box with a movable bottom, 0. At the bottom of the body a of the box is formed a flange, d, which extends inward a short distance and then up ward into the box, forming a seat for the movable bottom (2, and forming, also, a channel, 6, between the said flange (Z and the body of the box. The movable bottom (3, which is of a form to snugly fit within the box, is provi ded with a downwardly-extending flange, c, and the said flange and the upwardly-extending flange (Z of the body a are preferably relatively so formed and arranged that the one will snugly fit within the other. The body a of the box will in practice be made gradually wider from the bottom upward, as shown, whereby as the movable bottom a is pressed upward, acting as a follower to the cream, the latter need be moved but very slightly to loosen it and permit its ready removal.
To the interior of the body a, at a distance from the bottom, a retainer for the bottom may be secured, if desired. In the drawings I have shown two such retainers, f, each formed of sheet-tin or like sharp material,
bent at its ends into the vertical plane of the bottom, whereby the latter will be always held within the box. By thus insuring its retention within the box it will be less liable to be misplaced or injured, while being readily accessible for thorough cleansing.
The retainers (one or both) may be omitted, and the bottom be thus movable to the top of the box; but the use of retainers is to be preferred.
The exact form of the retaining device, it will be understood, is not essential; but with the form shown the sharp edge presented to the cream offers but little resistance to the same and does not mar its appearance.
The channel 6 will retain any small amount of cream that may become melted.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The herein-described box and movable bottom therefor, the box being formed open at top and bottom and provided with an inwardly-exten ding flange at its bottom extending upward into the interior of the box, form ing a channel around the body at the inside thereof, and forming, also, a seat for the movable bottom, the said bottom being provided with a downwardl y-extendin g flange on its under side, the flange of the body and that of the movable bottom bein relatively so formed as to fit tightly one within the other, substantially as described.
2. 'lhecombination, with the box-body open at top and bottom. and the movable bottom therein, of a fixed stop or retainer for the bottom, secured to the inner surface of the body a distance from the bottom to allow a limited outward movement of the bottom, substantially as described.
o. The combination of the movable bottom formed with a downwardly-extending flange JAMES VAN DYK.
