. 'NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
JOSEPH IV. PUTNAM AND WILLIAM HARMAN, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN;
- SAID PUTNAM ASSIGNOR TO SAID HARMAN.
DISPLAY AND SALE CABINET.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 668,659, dated February 26, 1901. Application filed April 3, 1900- Serial No. 11,316. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.
Be it known that we, JOSEPH W. PUTNAM andWILLIAM HARMAN, citizens of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids,in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display and Sale Receptacles or Cabinets; and we do declare the fol-lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in display and sale receptacles or cabinets, more especially of a character adapted for the display and sale of confectionery, tobaccos, spices, coffees, and other articles of an analogous nature.
The invention has for one object to provide a receptacle for the purpose set forth with a detachable side or front, conveniently in the. form of a shallow-box sample-holder having a transparent side which when the shallow box is in place constitutes a transparent side or cover for the display-receptacle.
A further object is to constitute the said shallow-box sample-holder in such a manner that articles can be placed therein and the box closed and placed in position in the display-receptacle.
A further object is to provide a display-receptacle with a removable side or back provided with a hole or door affording access to the receptacle. I
A further object is to provide a side or back of novel construction adapting it to be quickly and easily secured in place to constitute one side or back of said display-receptacle.
A further object is to provide a display or sale receptacle of generally improved and simplified construction.
In this specification and drawings the display or sale receptacle is shown in the form of a pail; but it is evident that the shape or configuration of the receptacle could be variously changed without departing from the spirit of the invention. For instance, the receptacle could be of box or cabinet form.
With such and other objects in view our invention is embodied in the various novel parts, arrangement,an'd combinations of parts hereinafter described, and particularly set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings we have represented a practical embodiment of the invention, the same being in the form of a pail; but we desire it particularly understood that we do not limit our invention in its useful applications to the construction which, for the sake of illustration, we have therein shown.
In the drawings, Figure l isa longitudinal sectional view through a receptacle embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the back end or side thereof. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the front or side end. Fig. 4. is an elevation of a part of the sam ple-holder, showing the securing means for the cover thereof. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional View on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
Referring to thedrawings, A indicates the body of a receptacle, here shown in the form of a pail-body and of circular cross-section and conveniently tapering slightly, as in the common or ordinary pail. A indicates a bail or handle therefor. At one end of the body, conveniently the small end, is a removable side or back B, which is shown as placed within the body and held in place by suitable means, such as one or more set-screws 0, working through parts or lugs D on the side or back and which screws are adapted to engage the body of the receptacle. The back is provided with a hand-hole or opening E, and prefer ably a cover or door F is provided therefor. The door F is shown to be slidably held in ways G G,c0nveniently constructed,as shown, of metallic strips secured to the back byscrews or tacks g, and the door also is conveniently formed of sheet metal, having one part thereof turned up to constitute a handle or grip f. The back on the inside is shown as being provided with a knob or device H, by which the back can be held while placing and removing the same from the receptacle.
I indicates a shallow box or sample-holder constituting one side, as the front,of the receptacle. This box I is shown to be of a size to fit snugly in the receptacle-body A and in the present instance is of circular cross-section and longitudinally tapering to conform to the body. The box I is removably held in place in the receptacle by suitable means, such as screws or nails, (indicated at The box I comprises a glass or transparent front J, sides or body K, and cover or back L, which latter and the body may for the sake of simplicity and cheapness be made of pasteboard or the like. The cover preferably does not project beyond the body or sides, so that straight unbroken sides result, enabling a better fit of the box I in the display or sale receptacle -body A. Suitable means is provided for securing the cover or back L to the body K as, for instance, one or more strips M, secured to one part and provided with an adhesive, enabling it or them to be readily secured to the other part. These strips being thin do not present obstructions in placing the box in the receptacle. If desired, the box I may be provided with a fanciful border at the edges of the front, as indicated at N.
As is Well understood, confectionery, finecut tobacco, spices, and many other articles are shipped and stored in receptacles, such as pails or boxes, one of which can be readily converted into our improved display or sale receptacle by simply removing the top and bottom or front and back and replacing the same by the removable front and back herein described in the manner set forth. In this way a single removable back and front can be made use of to convert the several shipping-pails into display and sale receptacles when it is desired to open the same for retailing the contents.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A display and sale receptacle comprising a body, a sample-holder in the form of a shallow box having a transparent side and removably held in said body and constituting the front of said display and sale receptacle, a removable back for said body provided with a door affording access to said receptacle, and means for detachably securing said back to said body.
2. A display and sale receptacle comprising a tapering body, a sample-holder in the form of a shallow box having tapering sides fitting in one end of said body and a transparent front and constituting the front of said display and sale receptacle, a removable back in the other end of said body and provided with a door, and means for detachably securing said back in the body, substantially as described.
3. Adisplayand sale receptacle, comprising a tapering body circular in cross-section, a shallow tapering circular box sample-holder fitted in one end of said body and having a transparent side constituting the front of the receptacle, and a removable back fitted in the other end of the body and constituting the back of the receptacle, a door closing an opening in said back, means for removably holding said back in place, and means for removably holding said sample-holder in place, substantially as described.
4. The combination withareceptacle-body, of a sample-holder box for the purpose set forth comprisinga body of a size to fit in the body of the receptacle, a transparent side, and a cover, said cover forming a flush side joint with said body, and thin strips secured to said box body and cover so as not to prevent a snug fit of the box in the receptacle-body, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofwe affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
