LUNCH BOX.
No. 298,340. Patented May 13, 1884.

LUNCH-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 298,340, dated May 13, 1884.
(No model E. The hood is adapted to be thus moved To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM FREDERICK BERGHOFER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Slater, in the county of Saline and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lunch-Boxes, of which the following isaspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to lunch-boxes which are made of sheet metal, pasteboard, or like material; and the invention consists of the novel construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the same on line 3 y of Fig. 3; and Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sec tion of the same 011 line 00 00 of Fig. 2.
The box, which is preferably made of sheet metal, but may be made of paper, pasteboard, wood, or wire, if desired, is constructed with a body, A, having the form of a semi-cylinder at its upper part and a rectangular prism at its lower part. This body is provided with an opening, a, 'in one side, extending from its extreme upper part to any desired extent toward its base.
To the lower edge of the opening, as at B, is hinged a lid, 0, and to the two ends of the box, and concentrically with the semi-cylin drical portion thereof, is pivoted a partly;cylindrical hood, D, which is adapted to be turned down and made to engage the upper edge of lid 0, while a spring-catch, E, on the outer surface of said lid, is adapted to engage a bead, F, on the lower edge of the hood, to hold said parts in closed position. The hood has the preferred form of a quarter of a cylinder, so that when its edge or bead F is engaged by catch E its opposite edge, G, shall be at or near the extreme upper part of the box, in order that the weight of the box, when it issuspended by a bail, H, attached to the said edge G, shall tend to hold the hood in closed position. The edge G is provided with a bead on the opposite side of the bail from the edge F, which is adapted to serve as a brace for supporting. the bail rigidly when in its highest position, in order that the bail may be used also as a handle for pressing the hood back out of engagement with the catch in dotted lines in Fig. 3.
backward until the edge F is brought to the extreme upper part of the box, as indicated Vhen desired, the bail may be turned down upon the hood.
The interior of the box is provided with ledges I, on which removable trays or dishes J are supported. On the upper tray is supported a partly-cylindrical liquid-receptacle,
K, having an opening closed bya screw-cap,
L, and provided with an outer cap, M. receptacle occupies the greater part of the concave portion of the box, being designed to fit closely therein to economize space. N is a ring attached to the receptacle, whereby it is to be drawn out of the box. 0 is a sheath or pocket for a knife and fork, the same being This secured to the inner surface of the hinged lid G, in order that when the lid is opened or turned down, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, the knife and fork or other article may be easily inserted through either end of the sheath, which is then in convenient position outside of the box.
What I claim is- 1. The combination of the body of the box, having its upper part made semi-cylindrical, and formed with an opening in one side thereof, and a partly-cylindrical hood pivoted to theends of said body and adapted to be swung forward to cover said opening, and having av bail attached to its rear edge, whereby the weight of the box, when suspended by the bail, will hold the hood in closed position, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of thebody of the box, the swinging hood pivoted to the ends thereof, the hinged lid adapted to be engaged by the hood, and the spring-catch attached to said lid and adapted to engage a bead 011 the edge of the hood, substantially as shown and described.
8. The combination of the body of the boX, the swinging hood pivoted to the ends thereof, the hinged lid adapted to be engaged by the hood, the spring-catch adapted to connect the said hood and lid together, and the bail attached to the hood, and means for supporting the bail rigidly, whereby it may serve as a handle for separating the hood from the lid, substantially as specified.
4. The combination of the body of the box, In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in having its upper part made semi-cylindrical presence of two witnesses. and provided with an opening in one side thereof, the partly-cylindrical hood pivoted I WILLIAM FREDERICK VBERGI'IOFER. to the ends of the said body, and the partlycylindrical liquid-receptacle supported in said Vitnesses:
upper part of the box substantially as shown HEZ. PURDOM, and described. XVILLIAM O. MCGUIRE.
