m: "cams PETERFP.. PHQTGLITMD" WASHINGTON B c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMILY O. MASON, OF BROOKLYN, NEIV YORK.
DUST-PAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 576,073, dated January 26, 1897.
A pli ation filed June 26, 1896. Serial No. 597,082. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMILY O. MASON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, Kings county, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Pans,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to dust-pans, and has for its object more particularly to provide an apparatus by means of which the matter to be collected may be readily transferred from its resting-place to the pan and thereafter serve as a convenient receptacle whereby the matter may be carried from place to place or wherein the same may be permitted to remain without the slightest danger of the same becoming scattered or in any wise disturbed.
The objects above set forth I am enabled to attain by means of my invention, which consists in the novel details of construction and the combination, connection, and arran gement of parts hereinafter more fully described and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my improved dust-pan; Fig. 2, a top view thereof, and Fig. 3 a section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In said drawings, A designates the dustpan; B, the base or tray 3 O O, the semicircular ends, secured to the base or tray B and provided along their front edges with the movable cover-guides D I).
E denotes the rigid cover portion, which is secured to the semicircular ends O O and the base or tray B and provided along its front edge with a rim F, and G denotes the movable cover portion, which consists of two quadrant-shaped ends H H, provided with a top I, having along its lower edge a rim 1' and upon its upper surface near its lower edge a knob J.
K K denote the pivots, by means of which the movable cover portion is pivotally attached to the ends 0 O of the pan.
L denotes the handle, secured to the pan upon the outer surface of the rigid cover portion E.
It will be observed that with my improved dust-pan the matter may be collected in the same manner as with an ordinary pan, but thereafter the same may be converted into a completely-covered receptacle by means of the rigid and movable cover portions, and thus form'a receptacle wherein the matter which has been collected may be retained without the slightest danger of any portionthereof being lost or in any wise disturbed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A dust-pan comprising a rectangular base, ends having straight and rounded edges and secured to the opposite edges of the base along their straight edges, guides provided along a portion of the rounded edges of said ends, a cover composed of a rigid curved portion having one of its straight edges. secured to the edge of the base intermediate the ends, and its curved edges secured to the ends, a handle secured to said rigid cover portion, and a movable curved cover portion comprising two quadrant-shaped ends pivotally secured to the ends aforesaid adjacent to the edges of the base, a curved portion provided with a knob, said curved portion being secured along its curved edges to the rounded edges of the quadrant-shaped ends, and adapted when opened to be concealed beneath the rigid cover portion, and when closed down upon the base to have its straight edge meet that of the base,
substantially as specified.
