UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
SAMUEL E. SCOTT, ()F SANDY HILL, NEW YORK.
COMBINED TOBACCO AND MATCH BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,246, dated April 11, 1882,
Application filed October 22, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. 800m, of Sandy Hill, in the county of Washington and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Tobacco and Match Box; and Ido hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description,
of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in combined tobacco and match box.
Tobacco-boxes are ordinarily made oval in form, with a convex bottom, and with a hinged cover or lid provided with an annular'fiange adapted to lap over the body of the box and hold it in a closed position, the top of the cover also being'convex. This construction of box is not liable to be crushed or distorted in shape by pressure, and is well adapted for the object in view. When the box is filled with tobacco it projects up to the top of the sides thereof, and when the lid or cover is closed the space between the annular flange of the cover or lid and the concave under surface of the said lid is empty.
The object of my invention is to utilize this empty space by providing a compartment rigidly secured to and forming a part of this lid, adapted to hold matches, and provided also with a sliding cover, which, when the lid is open, presents itself up, and when closed rests on the tobacco, the said sliding cover being provided with means for holding suitable material for striking the matches.
With these ends in view my invention consists in certain details in construction and combinations of parts, as will be more fully explained, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box with the lid thrown back and the match-compartment open, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the box with the parts in a closed position.
' A represents the tobacco-box, and B the cover, which latter is secured thereto in the ordinary manner, and is provided with the catch 0, adapted to engage with the projecting lip D on the body of the box and hold the lid in a closed and locked position.
The match-compartment E is rectangular in shape, and is provided with sides (1, ends I) and b, and bottom 0, the latter being secured to the concave under surface of the lid or cover B. The upper edges of the sides a of the match-compartment E are turned horizontally outward at right angles to the remaining portions thereof to form guides or slides for the sliding cover F, while the end I) is continued up slightly above the remaining portion of the compartment E, and is adapted to stop or check the sliding stop or cover F and prevent it from being moved too far over the compartment.
7 The sliding cover F is provided with turned edges d, adapted to fit over the horizontal edges of the sides a and hold the cover against vertical displacement, while the construction of the parts allow the sliding cover F to be moved laterally to one side for a certain distance, where its further outward progress is stopped by a depending lug, e, secured to the under side of the sliding cover F, abutting against the end I).
The upper surface of the sliding cover F is provided with the raised projection f, which affords the thumb or finger sufficient purchase to move the said sliding cover outward. This cover F is also provided with two flanges, 9, formed integral therewith or separate therefrom, as desired, and adapted to receive and retain between them a piece of sand-paper, h, or any other suitable material for igniting the matches. When this sand-paper It becomes unfit for use it can be removed and another piece substituted therefor.
Instead of forming the bottom a of the compartment E integral therewith, the under con- .cave surface of the lid can form the bottom thereofand answer all the desired purposes. So, also, can the match-compartment E be provided with a hinged cover, the latter being adapted to receive and retain the sand-paper in a similar manner to the sliding cover already described. I
My device is neat and compact in form, durable in use, and enables matches tobe carried conveniently, so as to be ready for use when desired.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Asa new article of manufacture, a tobacco-box provided with a match safe or compartment rigidly secured to the under side of the lid. or cover. thereof, the said match-compartment being provided with a cover having suitable material removably secured thereto for striking the match.
2. The combination, with a box provided with a suitable hinged lid, of a match-compartment rigidly secured to the inside of the said lid, a sliding cover adapted to close the said match-compartment, and suitable material removably secured to the top of the said sliding cover for igniting the matches, substantially as set forth.
3. Thecombination, with a box provided with a hinged cover or lid, the said box and cover being constructed substantially as described, ot' a match-compartment rigidly secured to the under concave side of the cover, a sliding cover adapted to close the matchcompartment and provided with suitable flanges for holding sandpaper for igniting the matches, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, with the box A and cover B, of the compartment E, having sides a, ends b and b, and bottom 0, and the sliding cover F, provided with the turned edges 01, depending lug c, raised projection f, flanges g, and removable sand-paper h, all of the said parts being constructed substantially as described.
5. In a combined tobacco and match box, the combination, with a tobacco-box provided with a suitable hinged lid, ofa match-compartment rigidly secured to the inside of the said lid and provided with a sliding cover adapted to be presented upward when the hinged lid is thrown open, the said sliding cover being provided with suitable means for striking the match.
In testimony whereof I have signed this All
