GUSTAV L. JAEGER, NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPRUVEMENT lhl HAT-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. Ilfihfifitb, dated March 9, 1875; application filed December 17, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV L. J menu, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Boxes for Bonnets and other articles, of which the following is a specification:
This invention is illustrated in the accompanyin g drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical section when the box is open. Fig. 2 is a similar section when the box is closed. Fig. 3 is a front view when the box is open.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a box the front and top of which are connected to the body by hinge-joints, while the interior of the box contains a projection for the support of a bonnet or other article.
In my box the top is connected to the body by a tape or cord, which extends through the side flanges of the top, through the sides of the body, "and over the top, so that it forms the hinge, and also a handle for carrying the box when the same is closed. Said top is provided with a downwardly-projecting flange at its rear edge, so that when said top is closed no dust can enter the box. The drop side or front of the box is provided with side flanges, which catch over the edges of the body, and through which is drawn a tape for the purpose of hingin g said side to the body. The body of my box is open on top and in front, and it is strengthened by a traverse connecting its top edges. In the interior of said body is secured a cylinder made of paper, and provided with gore-shaped incisions, so that bonnets or head-coverings of different sizes and shapes, or other articles, can be placed on the same.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the body of my box, which is open at the top and in front, its top edges being connected by a traverse, a, which is secured in position by tags or other suitable means, and which imparts to the body the required strength and stiffness. This body is provided with a cover, B, and with a drop side or front, 0. The cover is provided with side flanges b, a front flange, 0, and a rear flange, cl; and if the cover is closed down, these flanges overlap the edges of the body and the top ed ge of the drop front,
so as to exclude dust from the interior of the box. Said cover is hinged to the body A by means of a tape, 6, which passes through the side flanges b I), through the sides of the body A, and over the top of the cover, so that the same, when the box is closed, forms a handle for the purpose of carrying the box. The rear flange d is partially cut away, so that the cover can be thrown open to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawing, so that it will support itself in such position. The drop-front U is provided with side flanges f, and with a bottom flange, g, which, when said front is closed, overlap the sides and the bottom of the body A. Through the side flanges f and the sides of the body extend tapes h, and the bottom flange g is partly cut away, so that the dropfront can be opened to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 8.
\Vhen the drop-front is closed, as shown in Fig. 2, its top edge bears against the traverse a, and then the cover can be turned down, and thereby the drop-front is retained in its closing position.
The drop-front may be hinged by eyelets or other suitable devices.
In the interior of the body A is secured a cylinder, D, by preference made of paper, and this cylinder is provided at its outer edge with a series of incisions, 2', so that bonnets or head-covering, or other articles of different sizes and shapes, can be attached to the same.
'By these means a box is obtained in which bonnets or other articles can be exhibited to advantage, and which, when closed, forms a safe and convenient receptacle for the article or articles contained therein.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A box provided with a hinged cover and with a dropfront, both the cover and the dropfront being connected to the body of the box by tapes or other devices extending through the sides of the body, and through the side flanges of the cover and of the drop-front, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the body of a box, of the top or cover 13, hinged to the box, and having the rear flange 61 cut away, so that the top or cover can be opened and support itself in such position, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a box, of a cylinhave hereunto set my hand and seal this 9th der, D, secured in the interior of the box, and day of December, 1874.
constructed with a series of incisions or slits 45, substantially as described, whereby the said GUSTAV JAEGER' cylinder is adapted to receive and hold arti- Witnesses:
cles of different sizes and shapes, as set forth. W. HAUFF,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I E. F. KASTENHUBER.
