TATES A'rnNT OFFICE.
DAVID SNEDEKER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,605, dated August 5, 1873 application iiled J une 25, 1873.
To all whom it mag/concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID SNEDEKER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Packages for Fruit 3 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing formingpart of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l is a topview of a fruit-package constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view, showing the handle in its lower position. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of this invention.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to packages for fruit and other articles; and it consists in combining with an ordinary box (uncovered) in which the fruit is contained, an outer ornamental package composed of willow or other suitable light and ornamental material, which is capable of being wrapped about the inner box. The top of the outside package is cut through on three sides to form a lid, and the lid is kept down by the handle, which consists of a light strap of wood or other suitable material arranged over the package with its ends bent down alongside the ends of the package to which they are secured by the saine pin or fastening which secures the ends ofthe package, the pins going through slots cnt in the ends of the handle so that the vhandle can be raised or lowered at pleasure. y die is pushed down to its lowest position it hugs the top of the package and keeps thelid of the package shut; when it is raised,it' relieves the lid, so that it can be raised'to get at the fruit, and the handle can then be used to carry the package. By pushing the handles down the packages can readily be packed away in cases in as small a compass as though they did not contain handles.
My invention enables me to provide a tasteful ornamental package for fruit, ready for packing and for transportation and for carrying simply by the hand, and at the same time the contents are easily accessible.
The letter A designates the interior coverless box, o'f wood or other material, in which the fruit or other article is placed. Around the box A is wrapped the exterior covering B, which I prefer to make of plaited willow or similar cheap material that can be wrapped and folded similarly to paper, and can be ornamented in colors to present a neat appearance. Paper or textile fabrics can be used also for this purpose with advantage. The end folds C of the wrapping are fastened by pins or nails D, which are driven through into the inner box, and before the nails are driven I insert behind the folds C the slotted ends of the handle E in such a manner that the nails pass through the slots, thereby ,securing the handle to the package. The nails are not driven close but are left projecting so as to permit the handle to be raised and lowered by its slots on thenails at the ends of the package. The top of the covering is cut through near three of its edges, so as to form a lid, as shown by the cuts F, the cuts being so made that the lid G thereby formed will come partly under the handle, which will when in its lowest position, press the lid down close and keep it shut and preserve the contents of t-he package from dust. The top of the package can be cut so as to form double glids, one at each end, if desired. The margin ,iof the covering outside ofthe incisions F is /fastened down by nails H, which are driven into the edges of the inner box.
XVhat I claim as new, and desire`to secure by Letters Patent, is
The package B for holding and carrying fruit or other articles provided with a lid, G, and sliding handle E combined together, substantially as described, and adapted to the box A, as set forth. Y
DAVID SNEDEKER.,
