Patented May 2, I899.
J. UNSER.
PASTEBOARD BOX. (Application filed Sept. 24, 1898.)
(No Model.)
FIE-- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN UNSER, OF CARTHAGE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO JOSEPHINE M. UNSER, OF SAME PLACE.
PASTEBOARD BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,408, dated May 2, 1899.
I Applioation filerl September 24, 1898. Serial No. 691,797. (No model.)
'To all whom; it 112 03, concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN UNSER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carthage, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pasteboard Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel form of cardboard box and blank for forming the same; and the object is to provide a simple, cheap, and durable box of this character.
To this end the invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafterfullydescribed and claimed.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the box is formed. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the box formed from said blank. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central section looking toward the front ofthe box. Fig; 4 is a horizontal section.
The blank is punched, cut, or stamped from a single piece of cardboard, as shown in Fig. 1, the dotted lines representing the integral hinge-joints or points on which the blank is folded in forming the box.
1 denotes the rectangular bottom, and 2 the standing front, formed integral with the front edge of the bottom.
3 denotes the standing back, formed integral with the rear edge of the bottom 1, and 4 and 5 denote the standing ends, the inner edges of which are integral with the outer edges of the back 3, while from their bottom edges project the integral extension-pieces 4' and 5, extending across the bottom 1, so that their outer parallel edges 6 6 abut, as shown in Fig. 3, and completely fill the space in the bottom of the box.
7 7 denote the front extension-straps, which are formed integral with the front edges of the ends 4 and 5, their lower edges resting on the contiguous front edges of the end extension-pieces 4' and 5, while their overlapping ends and the front 2 are joined by an eyelet 8 when the box is set up.
The upper edges of the ends 4 and "5'are curved, as shown, and the top 9, which is integral with the back 3, is turned forward and downward to form an arch over the ends, and
its free edge 10 is provided with an orifice 12 to receive the eyelet 8 when the top is closed, as shown in Fig. 3.
Any suitable fastening device may be employed in lieu of the eyelet S, a very convenient fastener for this purpose being shown in my application serially numbered 673,071.
13 denotes the flexible handle or grip-strap, being formed near its outer ends with the longitudinal tongues 14 14, which receive the staples 15 15, secured in the arched top 9.
A box thus formed is unusually strong for the material from which it is constructed, the end extensions 4 and 5' and the overlapping straps 7 7 acting as braces to give rigidity and resist any ordinary external strain to which the box may be subjected.
Having thus described my invention, what 7 I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patout, is-
1. As a new article of manufacture, a
stamped blank for boxes made from a single piece of sheet material, comprising the bottom section 1, the front 2, and the back 3, formed integral with the top 9, and arched ends 4 and 5, the end extensions 4 and 5', and the overlapping straps 7 7 formed integral with the said ends 4 and 5, substantially as set forth.
2. As anew article of manufacture, a paper or analogous box formed of a single piece of material, and having its end Walls formed with the bottom extensions 4 and 5", the parallel edges 6 6 of which are arranged to abut across the bottom, and the straps 7 7 which are arranged to overlap on the inside of the front 2, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JO l-IN UNSER.
Witnesses:
PETER W. LYMAN, ANTONIO F. MILLS.
